If you are getting an error when you try to record, it could be many things.

1. The program is not installed correctly
2. You are not using a sound card or recording device that the program can use
3. You are making a request that the program cannot complete

There are others, but these are the big three. From reading what you wrote, I want to say you are trying something with MIDI, simply because you mention "after selecting the instrument". Is there a way you can screen shot what you are doing so it can be easier to understand?

If this is MIDI, you will need to make sure you have a sound card or Microsoft Wave Table. It is required because MIDI itself is not sound, it is data that tells the sound device to make a certain sound.

this is easy..... here is how i fixed the same issue on my system.

1) Click file & go to - Program Preffrences then go to - System Options.

2) Go to Audio System.

3) Change the driver system to ASIO. Then hit OK. mine works fine with all updates up to date!

What I suspect is happening when this (Undefined External Error) comes up is, there is no audio device available. When you select ASIO in Audio System that will be the audio device it automatically chooses!!! HOW IS IT THAT MAGIX CANT TELL YOU HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM? Dear Magix, Can I please get a job with you please?!!? I can help many people not only resolve problems but I can teach them how to utilize many functions in Samplitude! l0l
