Movie Studio Not Same as Vegas Studio?

Brij-Bharadwaj wrote on 7/18/2023, 5:56 PM

Just purchased the MAGIX Movie Suite upgrade because I have Vegas Studio Platinum 16 . Looks like I have been fooled into believing that I am upgrading my existing software because the new software is nowhere close to what I had earlier. I can't open my earlier project files with the extension of ".vf". Is this a totally new software? Looks like I just wasted my money. A sorry case of misleading advertising.

Any help will be appreciated.

regards,

Brij

@Brij-Bharadwaj

I am sorry to say that yes, you have been conned. Magix took over Movie Studio, then it was closed down, then Magix renamed it's own video editor, Movie Edit Pro, to Movie Studio with no clear advice to anybody that that is what it had done, especially to "upgraders" like you.

You are not the first to fall for this.

There was a feeble attempt to get the Magix editor to open the old Movie Studio files but it didn't do a very good job at all, apparently.

Have a look at your order email. You should have a 14 day window to get a refund, no questions asked. If outside that, you would have strong case for a refund anyway given the deception.

All that said, Magix Movie Studio is a pretty capable editor, allbeit totally different to what you are used to. And we are a generally happy and helpful bunch when it comes to new-starters.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Thank you @AAProds. Your explanation is very helpful. I have received an email from their sales department that they will issue a refund. Hopefully I should get the money back soon.

@Brij-Bharadwaj Hi, the closest 'upgrade' of your Vegas Studio Platinum 16 is Vegas Edit, you should be able to get an upgrade price for that, download the Trial 1st to see how it is.

Hey Gid,

I don't see any Vegas Edit on the web site. But I think that for now, I would like to withdraw from this update/upgrade and be content with my current software and just move on. I appreciate your suggestion but I think I am too burnt from this con game of MAGIX that I am not willing to try anything more from MAGIX. I just want my money back. 😀

@Brij-Bharadwaj Vegas Pro Edit is on the Magix Vegas product pages https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-edit/

As Gid said you probably qualify for the upgrade price. But be warned you need to check your pc meets the minimum specs required. It should open your vf files. Unless you have a need for the extra capabilities of Vegas Pro and appear happy with VMS16 then I'd stick with VMS16.

@ericInz, this is interesting. I am curious about who owns this Vegas software since MAGIX is a different software. But I am also averse to subscriptions and the only extra capability would like to add to my VMS 16 is multicam editing but I would not want to pay a lot for this one feature because most of my other requirements are met with VMS 16. Thanks for your guidance. I will keep the link for future.

@Brij-Bharadwaj

Just for the sake of being absolutely correct: Magix is the company. They own and manufacture both the Magix Movie Studio line of products (formerly called Magix Movie Edit Pro) and Video Pro X. Following the purchase several years ago of the Vegas range of products from former owners Sony, Magix also now owns that range.

@AAProds explained in his reply to you about the unfortunate consequences of Movie Edit Pro becoming rebadged as Movie Studio, much to the confusion of many users of the older Vegas Movie Studio.

Also, although there are subscription versions of, I believe, ALL Magix video editing products (both Movie Studio range and Vegas range) they can also be purchased for a single payment; such purchase entitles the user to one year of updates. I understand why you should think they are subscription only, the web page here is not very clear. But, if you click on the small blue down-arrow at the side of where it says "Annual Subscription (Yearly payment)" you will see a range of different options for purchase.

I noticed with the new 'upgrade' to Movie Studio 2024 it mentions that the entire interface has changed (again), so I am a bit sceptical about upgrading now, especially since I had to go through a massive learning curve to get used to Movie Studio 2023 after being conned into upgrading from Vegas Studio Platinum. Could someone please explain to us what the new differences will entail and whether we would need to do another learning curve to get used to the new software before we upgrade?

@MarJe

As far as I'm aware nothing has changed to the actual workflow between the 2023 and 2024 versions. It's more of a cosmetic makeover.
