Movie Setting: Play movie in loop mode?

I think Project, Movie and Movie Project are used interchangeably and are generally understood. As we know VPX is unique in that a Project can hold multiple movies, or more descriptively as John EB has indicated; 'movie projects'. If you carefully read the manual's description of Loop Mode, Al is technically correct in that the word "project" in the last sentence should be replaced with "movie". It should read:

Playback starts at the playback marker and after reaching the end of the movie will restart at its beginning.

But even if the documentation is corrected, this still doesn't describe what is actually occurring. The system plays back the movie and some blank space until the player hits the end of the project window before returning to the beginning. The bank space is not part of the movie unless you deliberately export a range including the blank space. Hence my confusion in my original post. Lets see what Support's response will be...

Hi,

Agreed, someone took artistic license and should have written movie instead of project.

However, as I have pointed out, the end of the movie will be the end of the timeline so long as one has not extended the timeline as I showed. Doing so increases the end of the movie for editing purposes, fortunately not for export purposes (at least I don't think so).

Perhaps Magix should document what the end of the Movie means and that before using looping playback one should optimize the timeline view. Either that or fix it so that the end of the loop corresponds to End (of the material on the timeline).

It's just that I wouldn't want fixing this to become a priority over the problem of putting trimmed clips in the Project Temp Folder becoming 1 second long instead of the trimmed length and getting Sound Forge Audio Cleaning 4 to work properly with VPX, and fixing MAGIX Capture.

John, I don't understand what you're getting at here. If you don't have enough space to add objects at the end of the movie, you simply scroll the wheel towards you; the objects in view will move left and blank space will be generated to the right.

"Whole Movie" Exports never go past the last object, even if there's a gap along the way.

I'm glad you mentioned "Enter" for optimising the timeline view. I use it all the time now. :)

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Al,

As you say, when you scroll with the mouse wheel, it adds duration to the movie even though there is nothing there, the same as clicking on - at the bottom right. You can now play back in that empty area. If you couldn't play back in that empty area, I don't think that it would be available. Or, if the playback marker could not go past the end of the material, then scrolling with the mouse wheel would likely not add time. Unintended consequence of "fixing" something like the playback marker only playing to the end of the material.

Hi everyone, Support has responded and asked me to send them a video to help them understand the issue. In the process of producing the video, I came across two bugs. The first bug relates to playback. Playback actually plays to the length of the movie project, rather than the length of the project window, but you have to perform a "trick". The video demonstrates the trick. The second bug is related to the screen capture file I created. Its length is 9:39:11 . If you import it into Vegas Pro its 9:39:11 (the same). But if you import it into VPX16 or MMS2024, the end is cut off and the length is 9:01:06. So I had to edit the video in another editor! 🙁 I also sent this source file to Support to investigate. Have any of you experienced this clipping of the video file?

Hi.

I can confirm both your findings in VPX 14 as well, running Windows 10.

I'm not sure but I think with the first problem my example loops more times before the program corrects itself.

I have 64GBs of ram so possibly a memory dump problem?

I know Microsoft have just released an update (KB5040525)KB for both Win 10 and 11 with a patch for a similar memory problem with memory not being released in some situations. I have not installed that patch yet as it is optional but I will try it and see if it makes a difference.

[Update] Downloaded KB5040525 and it made no difference. It is a large download in more than one part and took some time to complete.

Ray.

Hi Ray, thanks for taking the time to validate my findings. As @browj2 indicated in a previous post, there are a number of bugs that have been haunting Magix software for a long time that need to be addressed. This just adds another to the list. Hopefully, once Vegas Pro 22 gets released, it will free up time for the Development team to tackle some of these issues. Cheers!

The developer teams for Vegas Pro and MMS/VPX are completely independent of each other. My understanding is the former are based in the US whilst the latter are in Europe.
