One alternative is to go into the Effects tab then Movement effects then Section/Zoom.

Now in the upper portion called “Section” right above the “Fill screen” check box there is an option there that by default says “keep proportions.”
If you click on the little down arrow that’s to the right of it you will see more options, i.e., 16:9 Landscape. The only problem is it’s going to zoom in on your picture and thereby crop some of the picture. But you can move the landscape selection frame up and down on the monitor to crop more of the top or the bottom. You will also notice that the black bars will still be there until you actually start playing the video, and then it will zoom in to that format. You can also do a similar thing in the "Size/Position" section as well by dragging the selection handles in the monitor but you’re still zooming in on the picture.

That’s about all I can suggest, but someone else may know of a better alternative that I’m unaware of though.

If you dont care about cropping, then just right click on the photo and go to Properties. Here there is the aspect ratio setting, simply write in here 16:9 and click OK and the photo will get stretched out.

Small hint, just in case you get bored changing each picture individually, try batch processing them using.

Open MEP, and in the Edit window, choose Effects, Video Object Effects, and choose Edit in Xtreme Photo Designer.

Once this program opens, click on File and choose Batch processing. In the Batch processing window that appears, choose all the files you wish to convert under Add Image,

Under Actions , locate Image, then choose Change page size. Click on the arrow so that it is registered in the Task box. Now click on parameters, untick the maintain aspect ratio, and set the values you require.

This is much faster.
