The freezing might be caused by additional programs running on the computer that you may or may not be aware of... If you have icons around the system clock of Windows, then you have other applications running from start-up and these programs are using systems resources that may have an indirect effect on the performance of the Music Maker.

My suggestion is to run a selective startup, which requires you to do an MSCONFIG on the startup tab and turn everything off that is non-essential and the only thing that I believe would be essential is a antiviral software. Anything else is just a resource hog and very unnecessary.
