Magix deliberately slowing-down older versions of MEP?!?

Apollo89x wrote on 3/11/2024, 10:22 AM

I've got MEP (pro plus / 2022 version)

My laptop is a high-spec editing & gaming latop, and for the previous years MEP always ran fine.

Suddenly though (for the past 2-weeks) MEP opens extremely slowly... Plus lags & freezes when doing even basic tasks!

But so I just wondered if this is due to Magix deliberately slowing-down older versions of their software...
To force users need to upgrade to (*pay for) the latest year's version??

@Apollo89x

I honestly don't think there is any method by which Magix could "slow down" older versions of MEP.! The only "connection" between a user's laptop and the Magix servers is made when checking that a current licence is held.

But, if it is of any reassurance to you, I have the latest versions of MEP, now named Movie Studio (2024) and Video Pro X (15) installed on my computer (spec in my signature, below) and both can sometimes be rather slow to open. However I do NOT see lags and freezes. Is it possible a recent update to Windows has created a problem for you? Are you certain that ALL your drivers, especially for graphics, are fully up to date? For the latter you should always go to the manufacturer's website and not depend on Windows Update to offer you the "latest" version.

HTH.

Hi

. . . . Magix deliberately slowing-down older versions of MEP . . . .

They are not, however your laptop maybe the issue, so we need more information to help diagnose the issue you are having:

The specification of your computer system including Windows version and program version, see this topic for what is required, and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

How much free disc space is available?

What has changed between working normally and now lagging, eg updated Windows to a different version, changed video format you are importing etc?

Are the graphics card/integrated GPU drivers up to date?

From one of your previous topics 'I rarely shut my laptop, merely put it to sleep', are you still doing this?

My graphics cards + software & windows drivers are all upto date.
(I've got a ROG Scar 2 laptop gaming laptop | Windows 10)

And no, I turn-off my laptop everyday.

#

I haven't changed anything on my laptop for the past few months now (no new software installations / updates to any drivers... ect) :: So the problem is quite clearly with MEP's software.
(As everything else on my laptop is running totally fine, as per normal - It's only MEP which has suddenly developed an issue)

#

I have now uninstalled MEP entirely...
And will try to re-install a clean fresh install of the program (*although it doesn't seem to want to allow me to do a fresh install / instead keeps restoring the previous version!)

Hi,

Were you on the Update Service program when you got MEP2021 and then were able to upgrade to 2022 within the 1 year period? If so, then, since you tried to reinstall, it will roll back to 2021 and you will not get 2022. This was one of the conditions of the Update Service.

No, I had purchased the 2020 version.

Then I paid £35 to upgrade that to the 2022 version.

(Have the email with download link | But it seems to keep just restoring my MEP to exactly how it looked earlier today, rather than being a brand new fresh clean-install)

Hi,

But is it MEP2022? What does it say at the very top left?

Help, About, what is the version number?

MEP Pro Plus

Version 21.0.2.138 (UDP3)

#

It's reinstalled - However it is not a ''fresh clean install'.

As for some reason MEP does not allow you to re-install a fresh version (if you've previously used the software)...
Instead, it automatically restores itself to the same layout & specs as the previous pre-uninstalled version | Rather than being a fresh clean install.

It's reinstalled - However it is not a ''fresh clean install'.

Depending on exactly HOW you uninstalled the previous version, what you are seeing is almost certainly to be expected.

IF you simply used the default Windows Uninstaller you would have failed to remove ANY file/folder/registry entry created by the first and subsequent runs of the program. Because these are not created at the time of the original installation the Installer Log (which Windows uses to effect the uninstall) does not list them and so they are not removed. They therefore remain "in use" for the reinstalled program.

For every other software/program, when you uninstall it via Windows uninstaller... That uninstalls the program.
(So not sure why MEP is designed in a way that it leaves traces/folders behind still)

As you seem knowledgable about this issue though, may I please how exactly I can actually FULLY UNINSTALL the program??

(As it's now developed a bug where it will freeze-up for 10-seconds, approx 20-30 seconds after the program is opened | Every single time | Even when no video is even loaded into the progam!)

Hi,

Before uninstalling, close all open programs, go to the temporary folder (%temp%) and delete all files. It could be that a temporary file is getting in the way!

Thanks - I will try that.

I have already used Revo Uninstaller to try uninstalling the program + deleted every registry which Revo detected...
Restarted my computer...
Re-installed MEP...

But STILL however isn't a clean install!

(Magix have basically made this software like malware ffs!!)
