Hi Gabriel.

The image I posted above in the last line says iFrame, hence my reservations about whether the output is interlaced or not. A quick use of MediaInfo on a file from the camera would verify that.

The frame rates from both as long as the Go-Pro is producing constant frame rate should be close enough not to cause crashes but I am worried about frame tearing or audio sync problems that may or may not happen. I don't have experience of using interlaced video but John has so maybe just wait until he comes on line. At least at making video at an HD level you will not be taxing the computer as much.

The recording progressive/interlaced information is in the specs for the camera:

Movie Resolution:1920x1080 (60p/​30p)
1280x720 (30p)
640x480 (30p)
1920x1080 (30p/​15p)
1280x720 (6p/​3p/​1.5p)
640x480 (6p/​3p/​1.5p)

The camera records progressive only, an i instead of p would be interlaced and the 'framerate' number should be doubled - so 25 fps interlaced would be 50i - the i indicating the number fields per second

The bottom two settings are for time lapse recording.

Flat screen TV's are progressive devices, as are computer screens, the processors in them takes care of the 'conversion' for interlaced video sources, they also do a better job of upscaling for example,DVD to FullHD.

It shouldn't - I used to mix interlaced and progressive video of 25 fps (Sony video camera) and 30 fps (sportscam) without any crashing problems. The only 'issue' I had was a combination of the change in framerate and interlacing of the progressive on export with the occasional judder on fast action shots and panning.

The question is, is the GoPro a true 60 fps or just rounding up of 59.94 fps for progressive recording, if using an interlaced and NTSC format the it should be 59.94 fps - you may want to look/ask in the GoPro forums.

Hi Gabriel.

I'm pretty sure the output from the Go-Pro is progressive only so I don't foresee any problems although it could be 29.970 instead of 30fps as John suspects. I was just unsure of the Canon cameras' output. As John suggests, just set the project to export at the solid frame rate (30; 60; whatever) and the program should compensate.

If you get 'Do you want to alter the project settings' when importing clips at any point once the project is set, just select 'ignore' or whatever the option is to carry on without altering anything.

Hi Ray,

My GoPro Hero5 Black films progressive at constant frame rate: 29.970 (30000/1001) FPS.

I just checked a couple of files from my wife's iPhone and it films at whatever it wants - variable frame rate, sometimes 25.142 from 23.077 to 75.00, another time (one after the other) 29.012 from 24.00 to 30.00. This is terrible, Apple has no shame.

Hi John.

I don't know about the latest iPhones but the 6 series did allow you to set the recording to a constant frame rate and use the MP4 format.

The problem may be down to storage write speeds. If the processor can cope, less data has to be written to any memory in use and if that memory is a micro SD card then it doesn't have to be able to read and write as quickly.

My DSLR for instance can write to an XQD card at 440MB/s and possibly faster once I download the new firmware which will allow for the newer faster CF express cards that have at least doubled that write speed to be used. That data transfer rate makes that card extremely hot and I can feel the heat bleed through the camera body into my right hand sometimes. My little action cam records at up to 100Mb/s and needs to use micro SD cards with that are at least A2 rated and 60MB/s or higher write speeds for video. That too gets more than a little warm to the touch while recording. This is purely down to the amount of data being transferred. So it may no longer just be a data storage problem with iPhones, but also avoiding data transfer bottlenecks or limitations on storage speeds.
