Hi,
if you push the record button and the record dialog opens, use the first left button on the top to open the fader for recording volume. If you have a track with a lot of dynamic record it more soft to have no clippings. After recording you can get a more adapted loudness with the function "normalization" and the masterting functions (especially multimax).

Do you go direct from the tape recorder into the line in of your PC? You do not need a USB pre amp in that case....

Hi,
Lazerboy touched on something that's important; are you using a PC sound card
to record? If yes then make sure you're using the line-in and not the mic-in. The mic-in will boost your gain for lower mic levels and cause clipping.
