I can't burn DVD-R in MEP 14+ with PLDS DH-16A6S writer

Greetings fellow MEP 14+ users.

I have a Dell XPS 630i running Windows XP, SP3, with two HDD's in RAID 0. The XPS 630i has a PLDS DH-16A6S DVD writer. It has a SATA interface.

My video editting software Magix Movie Edit Pro 14+ cannot burn a blank DVD-R. In fact, it can't burn an already erased DVD-RW.

When using the XPS 630i, the system hangs up. I can't get to the Task Manager, I can't open Windows Explorer. I have to hold the PWR button down to kill everything and restart.

I updated the PLDS's firmware to the latest Y12, still no joy.

When I tell the video software to go ahead and erase a DVD-RW, it will erase then burn successfully on the XPS 630i. In fact, if the DVD-RW disk is already erased and I tell the software to erase again, it will burn successfully.

So the problem is when I don't ask the software to erase.

Just for the heck of it, I checked the "format" box in MEP 14+ to see what would happen on a DVD-R. No joy. The system hangs up.

Finally, I looked at the data side of all these "coasters" I've made and noticed that on the failed burns, there is always a tiny ring that is written. Maybe it's about 3 mm wide.

When using Nero, it is able to burn both DVD-R and DVD-RW (erased or non-erased).

Funny thing is MEP 14+ can burn both DVD-R and DVD-RW when using my Dell Precision M70 laptop, but can't on my XPS 630i. So I'm reasonably confident that it's the PLDS DH-16A6S that's messed up.

I also downloaded and installed the latest burn routines from Magix's support site. Still no joy.

Does Magix have a list of DVD writers that they have thoroughly tested? I would like to purchase a writer that is on their "approved" list.

Maybe I need to buy a DVD writer with the old style 40-pin IDE interface.

Any suggestions?

Okayyyy. I guess no one has an answer to this.

What I ended up doing was getting rid of the Dell PLDS DH-16A6S, DVD burner and replaced it with an old technology LG, IDE burner.

Fortunately, the motherboard supports IDE.

Now MEP 14+ can burn a DVD.
