I've been working on creation of show on DVD in AVCHD. I noticed a bit ago that when PhotoStory did the encoding and created parent folder based on Project file name, it put the individual shows in M2TS files. When it did the encoding in put everything in PRIVATE \ AVCHD 9omitting any reference to the project file name it output the shows to MTS files. Any idea why?
And what made it decide to create a "PRIVATE" folder instead of using the project file name?

There is no difference between mts and m2ts files - they are the same thing.
As far as Photostory is concerned, if you are exporting to AVCHD, the program is set to export as m2ts and you cannot change this - if you do the export refuses to start.
You can change the file extension in Windows Explorer to the older DOS compatible 3 character format with Windows versions which cannot handle the 4 character extension, however this is would only be necessary if you have, for example, a Media device which can only handle the old 8.3 filename / extension.
NOTE: If you intend to burn to Blu-ray disc then you must keep the m2ts file extension.

The PRIVATE folder is associated with some video cameras, eg Panasonic, file structures - how did you copy the video files from camera to PC?

Weird. (But that's what my wife says about me, too.)
It's all from the same MPH. The stuff in it is a mixture of JPGs - primarily from a Canon SX10, with a few from an IPhone, a few panoramas created using Canon's Photo Stictch, and a couple from Google Earth. Then there are a few MOV files from the same SX10.
Between the time when I had finished (so I thought ) tweaking the files M2ts files in the folder that was part of the compile from that project, I had attempted to tell it to create another disk using Speed Burner. That had worked fine for me once before (don't remember exact scenario) some months back, but this time all I kept gettng was DATA disks. And more coasters.
I really like the results of PS - just really wish I understood it better.
By the way, is there some reason why I would be getting an error:
"MPEG-4 export moduel: Export was canceled due to an unknown error" when I tried to export one of the shows to Full HD? It did the same thing regardless of quality level. (Just tried!)

The indicated export presets shown in the image below are for M2TS and MP4 h.264/AVC encoded video and AAC audio. To see all ensure that the Display all checkbox is selected.
Les préréglages d'exportation indiqués dans l'image ci-dessous concernent la vidéo encodée M2TS et MP4 h.264/AVC et l'audio AAC. Pour tout voir, assurez-vous que la case Afficher tout est cochée.
