How do you change the gain of the microphone in Music Maker 17?

I have a USB microphone that I'm using to record. On another free software, I was able to decrease the gain and it reduced feedback. I'm getting the same feedback on MM17, but I can't figure out if I can reduce the gain. Help?

When you start recording the recording dialog box shown should open.

Clicking the Advanced button will take you to the Windows sound control panel,

These are the controls for my Windows 7 system. Select the microphone as in 1 and adjust the volume as in 2.

Note your dialogs may be different depending on the version of Windows you have. Once set the recording level will be maintained until you change it again.
