Hi!  This question came up in the 2009 Q&A I believe, but the short answer is this:  Create a gap at the beginning of your slideshow by selecting first the intelligent mouse mode (this moves all pictures at once).  Next, click on the Text button and type the text that you want to appear in that space.  You will see that this gets created as an object on the 3rd track if you are in the "timeline" mode.  Your text will appear on a black background and then you can add effects to it and move it around to suit the gap you've created so that the text appears before the first photo.  While in "timeline" mode you can adjust the text object in terms of fading in/out relative to your first photo.  Go through the same exercise at the end of your movie.
