how do i delete a blank space in timeline mode

I am making a slideshow and I moved a picture from one place to another and the place were it was is now an empty black space and I can not remove it

Assuming the timeline has similar functionality to MEP.

Select the first image to the right of the blank space, click the transition button (A|B in MEP) and select Cut.

The gap will close then apply the transition you want.
