You will have to check out the license agreement with Microsoft. Where did the wmv files come from? 

Some wmv files might be proprietary, therefore they cannot altered. There might be some other programs out there that will allow you to convert wmv to another format, but.. I am not sure what those are, you can do a google search on the conversion.

I did a search and found koyotesoft, but I am not sure of the reliability. it says it is free, but I am nto sure what "extras" they force on you.

I made a WMV file with Movie Edit Pro, then opened a new project, then loaded the wmv, and went to file, export movie, exported it out as a mpeg-4... it worked fine for me. I do not have an ipod video, so I am not sure if there is a special codec for mpeg-4 used by Apple.

Then install.

This is a free video player, which has a capture function (Alt-C) that will output to a large choice of different formats.  It's the only video player I use now.
