File Not Found

Joshua-Burner wrote on 6/23/2023, 12:21 PM

I keep getting "file not found" errors when trying to reopen a project.

These files are stored on an external hard drive and I've never had this sort of issue until now. I've tried copying the files and moving them to other locations like my documents folder or another hard drive and open them there but I still get the same error.

@Joshua-Burner Hi, so when you open your project & you get that msg you use 'Folder' to find those files but you still get that msg when you open the project the next time?

I use folder to find the files, but when I locate the file and hit "Open" it gives me the exact same message with the exact same file.

@Joshua-Burner I've used this for 20yrs but I don't move my files around while a project is ongoing so i have to recreate this,

  1. I created a project with three files,
  2. Saved the project,
  3. Then move the media files & renamed them,
  4. Opening the project I received that msg & used Folder to to relink the media
  5. I got the 'Same' msg a second time
  6. After this I saved the project, closed it, & it opened it again with no error msgs,

Looking closer there's 0-6 files loaded but only 3 pieces of media in the project & looking at the error it says 0-6 & the second msg says 1-6, so i suspect one is audio & one is video,

Do you have something different, does the project open after you've reconnected the files?

@Gid That's the thing. I cannot reconnect the files at all. I click "folder," navigate to the file it can't find, click "open," and it gives me the message no matter how many times I do it. I've repeated the process 5 times for the same "missing" file and it still can't find it.

@Joshua-Burner Hmm,

  1. If you create a new project just as a test, can you add those files to it? If not it sounds like something is broken with the file,
  2. Try renaming the file then use 'Folder' to find that renamed file, because that renaming makes all temp files that MMS previously created in the orig name now redundant & it's a bit like starting again.
  3. If that doesn't work maybe the files themselves are broken, bits of info needed to import the files get lost, I can't describe it because i don't fully understand, some video players will play a damaged file but some won't, esp editors 🤷‍♂️ So consider converting your file to rebuild all the data needed.

We're getting somewhere. It says I need quicktime installed, but I thought I have the latest one installed?

EDIT: Alright, I just uninstalled and reinstalled quicktime. That fixed it.

@Joshua-Burner  👍 Your msg does say .mov, but I assumed you'd already had this file open in the past when you created this project?

This is Quicktime I have https://support.apple.com/kb/dl837?locale=en_GB

Also for looking at your files & learning about them there's an App called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, Copy & paste the information in a new comment on here or screen grab the MediaInfo window 👍
