Exporting

nmartens wrote on 12/30/2023, 6:47 PM

Still using Movie Editor Pro 2013 Plus (will upgrade in the not too distance future).

I created a project and burned it to DVD with menus. Without changing a thing I also exported it to a video file but the menus vanished. Is there a way to preserve the menus?

Thanks.

Assuming you mean the disc menus which are created when you go to the Burn Disc - No.

The file formats, MP4, MKV and MOV do support adding Chapters, however these usually have to be added using 3rd party software and are not supported by many players.

So, if I want to take my existing homemade DVDs and convert them to files, Magix can't do it? Do you have a favorite software with that capability that you can recommend?

Thanks.

Hi

. . . . take my existing homemade DVDs and convert them to files . . . .

Movie Studio can do this however there are some points to note:

  • The resolution of the DVD video files is 720 x 576 (PAL) or 720 x 480 (NTSC) - if you are intending to upscale to FullHD 1920 x 1080 then the video is not going to be very good quality, this is due to the low pixel count of DVD files - Full HD use ~ 5 times as many pixels.

  • If you still have the original projects then you would be better off using these and exporting using the original source video.

  • On the disc there are several different files in the VIDEO_TS folder, the files you need have the file extension .VOB and you need to Copy them to your PC before using them, then import them in sequence starting with VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB etc.

  • Ignore the VIDEO_VTS.VOB file this is the menu 'video' and if the menu is static will be a single frame and flash once when played

  • Only use Cut transitions between each VOB.

  • The final video will be one single file with no menus or chapters if used on the disc.

See this topic regarding AI upscaling it may help with upscaling issues.

On the disc there are several different files in the VIDEO_TS folder, the files you need have the file extension .VOB and you need to Copy them to your PC before using them

Alternatively, you can just import the DVD into Magix (drag the first VOB onto the timeline and the rest will follow automatically); it will automatically join up all the VOBs into one long file on the timeline s you can cut it up as necessary and export.

To streamline that process, you can make your cuts where you want to split up the DVD and then do a batch export. Magix will give you the option of exporting each object (from your splits) into separate files. You can also do this with chapter markers.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
