Edit pro 17 rotation/mirror effect

alflill wrote on 11/12/2024, 3:28 PM

When I import portrait video from my iPhone it goes on its side. I have tried using the rotation/mirror effect I can set it upright. However when closing and reopening the program it reverts on to its side, not saving the effect. Am I doing something wrong or is this a fault? I am using windows seven.

Hi.

It sounds to me like you have set the project up to display in landscape mode. You may have to manually put in the correct file dimensions into the project when you set it up. The startup New Movie screen doesn't allow that but after opening the new project go to File / Settings / Movie to get to the correct settings area and manually set up the project so that the screen ratio is 9:16 and not the other way around. Click on my image to enlarge it.

Are you able to put an example video up on Google Drive or another sharing site so we can try? I have a few iphone files here but they import correctly ie upright/portrait, and after I rotate them to Landscape they stay that way after a restart. You're going the other way.

It could also be that MEP 17, due to it's date of development, may not be reading the metadata of the newish iphone files correctly, but we could confirm that if you can give us a file to try.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Thanks for your replies.

I might be best if i explain what process i follow.

I have used Magix for about 20 years, I think 4 different versions.

i download photos and videos to my Windows 7 PC into photo gallery. I then import into the Magix program. Any photos or videos (shot on cam corder) no problem. Any iPhone video goes on its side both in photo gallery and Magix. In the Magix edit function there is no button to rotate video ( there is for photos) To resolve this I used to to import the video into Windows live movie maker, which allowed the video to be rotated. Then import the windows live movie back into Magix. This then gave me a movie with both photos and videos, which I want. Windows live movie maker has been discontinued, so I looked for another solution. I found the rotation/ mirror effect and found I could rotate the iPhone videos. However the effect will not save.
I don’t have the video on my Iphone anymore and refuse to use the cloud.
I recently bought a windows 11 computer which I cannot get on with, the storage is too low to enable me to run Magix 17 on that, plus It does not have a DVD drive. (You are probably saying why buy it then, I was talked into it!) I know I am old school but I am desperate to recover my videos in a watchable fashion from 2021, which I am working on currently.

I will try to upload examples.

All that sounds fair. If you have many files to "rotate" (as you did in Movie Maker), Handbrake will do the job; it will batch-convert a folder of files. You can apply Rotation and re-save them. If you need a hand with that, let us know. If you need assistance, it would be best to provide us with a MediaInfo readout. JohnEBaker, our moderator, has posted a setup tute here.

Then copy the text report and post it here. We can then provide detailed guidance for using Handbrake to rotate your videos.

Greetings,

When I have a batch of photos to rotate I use this method - it appears to rotate losslessly (is that a word?):-

Open the folder, select all the files to rotate, right click on one of them and click rotate right or left.

Obviously this is better if all the photos are rotated in the same direction but it's easliy overcome if they're not.

Of cpurse, none of this explains why MEP 17 doesn't rotate them. I suppose it's something in the Black Arts of the app or photos causing it.

AndyW

edit - and yes, I know that they were the correct way round before the rotation. I'm not as stupid as I look 😳

@AAProds Hi, I agree with @AAProds in that some files need converting first before importing into the editor, this isn't unusual esp with phone footage but as mentioned there's other things to take into consideration, iPhones are auto set to record MP4 HEVC, this can mess with older software. MP4 AVC was the old format which works in all software. iPhones also have Dolby & 10bit that might affect how an editor works with them.

Here's a couple of instances -

MMS doesn't recognise the aspect ratio of my Samsung S23 Ultra portrait clips (9:16), when dragged into MMS the videos are the correct way up, portrait, but the project remains Landscape (16:9),

In Vegas Pro one poster has had a couple of problems with the Pan/Crop option (sort of similar to MMS's Section), his phone clips had a 90º rotation because they were portrait, Vegas recognised them & imported them correctly in portrait but editing them was bit of a pain. Converting fixed this problem, whether it was the 90º rotation that was problem or not I can't remember & I don't think that was completely worked out or not.

These are just two random examples, the problems with footage can be very variable, & talking of variable, phone footage is filmed in Variable frame rate mode, this can cause problems, converting to Constant frame rate mode is better,

Why exactly some video footage has problems & why other's don't is sometimes impossible to fathom but converting the clips first will alter/correct these potential hazards & like I say not unusual for any editor to need this doing to the footage first..

Thanks for your replies and suggestions.

Cube Ace - tried your suggestion my settings screen looks different to yours and does not give the the option to convert to 9/16! Not sure that would work as I have mixed photos and videos in different aspects.

AA Prod - Cannot download Handbrake on Windows 7.

me again - is the screenprint of the pictures folder on your PC, my pictures folder does not look at all like that!

Am i missing something when using the rotation/mirror effect function on Magix Edit pro 17? As i say will rotate the video in the program but will not save i.e. I save the movie, but then exiting and entering again the effect is not saved.

Tried running updates on Magix edit pro17, none available in English!

If all else fails, I will have to delete the video clips shot in portrait from the movie, although i really don't want to do that!

Hi

. . . . I recently bought a windows 11 computer which I cannot get on with, the storage is too low to enable me to run Magix 17 on that . . . .

Assuming you do mean MEP 17, released in 2010, and not 2017, MEP 17 v10..x.x.x will not run properly on Windows 11.

. . . . However when closing and reopening the program it reverts on to its side, not saving the effect. . . . .

On the assumption that you did save the project before closing MEP.

. . . . In the Magix edit function there is no button to rotate video ( there is for photos) . . . .

It is the same button as for rotating images, see video clip below. I do not have an installation of MEP 17 however I do have MEP 16 running on Windows 10, this was used for the clip below.

Thanks John,

I haven’t tried to run Magix edit pro on windows 11, due to lack of storage space, thanks for the advice.

I think I mentioned saving the project before exiting. Still did not save the rotation effect.

I did exactly what is shown in your video. I was referring to rotate button in the top right corner on the timeline clip which allows rotation on a photo, but does not appear on a video clip.

I have watched a YouTube video which shows how to use the rotation/mirror effect, it shows using keyframe markers which I haven’t been able to successfully use, and will have another try. Does the keyframe markers need to be used in order to save the effect?
