Easy way to convert project to 9:16 AR?

Hi again,

This time I'm trying to get a 9:16 video going, like for YouTube Shorts or TikTok.

I've found this thread helpful: https://www.magix.info/us/forum/creating-verticle-format-video-project-1080-x1920--1290621/#ca1739271 and also the tutorial linked in it. Thanks for that!

But this is for a new project. Is there a way to "convert" an existing project (e.g. in 16:9 AR) to the 9:16 AR? I'd still have to zoom into every video/photo to not have it letterboxed I guess but at least I wouldn't have to re-create all the cuts I made already.

Cheers, Matt

Matt, there's no such thing as "Project Settings" in this context. What you're changing is the movie settings. Each movie in the project can have it's own settings, eg Movie 1 could be 16:9, movie 2 could be 9:16.

All you have to do is change the current movie settings (File>Settings>Movie...) to 9:16. Movie Edit Pro has a Social Media dropdown where you can choose 9:16 1080x1920. VPX is probably the same. Make sure you set the other parameters as well eg resolution (1080x1920) and frame rate.

Alternatively, you could copy all your current movie objects and open a new movie in the same project (the Plus + button on the right of the movie tab/s) and paste, then set the new movie parameters as above. Then you can crop to your heart's content to fit into the 9:16 window.

Note that you can also make a square movie; just use the Social Media preset or make your own. Put in the resolution eg 1500x1500, the ratio (1:1) and off you go.

When you export, make sure the export parameters are correct; if not, change them to match your movie.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
