Hi

I would guess that you are overloading the microphone input (red socket) with too high a signal level.  The microphone socket is for microphones only - they produce a low signal level .  

You should not feed any other audio into the red socket. 

For higher level signals you should be feeding in to the Line In socket - normally coloured blue.  

However many laptops no longer have this socket and you will need to use an audio to USB converter - make sure it has three sockets Mic, Line In and Speakers/Headphone out.
