Not sure about why the file doesn't import, though. What type of file is that (file format/codec)? I'd strongly suggest switching over to timeline view. At least you will see what exactly is going on. Maybe the file was imported, but you're not seeing anything in the thumbnail of the overview mode because the first frame of the video is black or at least gets decoded as a black frame.
