defining object size using KEYBOARD

Roberto-Goncalves wrote on 2/25/2024, 2:32 PM

Hi,

Well today I needed to select an exact size of an object using ONLY THE KEYBOARD. I remember I posted on this forum and no one responded.
As I needed this today, I was able to do it because I discovered that the visualization's time field also accepts data input. I did this:

I selected the beginning of the object, then entered the seconds, the number of frames and then press the enter key
The result follows the displayed range. Now it's easy to cut it if that's your goal.

If anyone has a better way using the keyboard, it would be good to post it here.

Thanks!

Hi,

I just discovered that navigating the range with Ctrl Home (go to the beginning of the range) and Ctrl End (go to the end of the range) doesn't work. Could anyone confirm?

Thanks!

@Roberto-Goncalves

Hi

Confirmed, unless of course we are missing something.

Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End does not work in MMS 2023, I also tested in MEP 2016, MMS 2024 and VPX 15 - does work in any of them either.

@browj2 I checked the bug lists, I could nor see any reports for this, nor does the forum Search bring up any results on this issue.

Hi,

OK! Shift+i Shift+o works!
But anyway in the menu "Edit / more view / To beginning of range and To end of range" they need to be repaired!

I opened a ticket!

Thanks!

@browj2, @Roberto-Goncalves

Thanks, John.

As I commented - 'unless of course we are missing something' which we did.

The definition of Ctrl+Home and End needs a conditional statement to say work 'when the full range is not in view', ie the section of the timeline visible in the timeline has at least the In or Out point 'off-screen'.

At first sight the 2 functions appear tp do the same thing, however, they have subtle differences:

Shift + I and Shift +O move to the appropriate In/Out point, which is placed at the current timeline cursor position

Ctrl + Home and Ctrl + End move to the appropriate In/Out point, positioning the In/Out point and timeline cursor in the centre of the timeline pane.

In the manuals I interpreted Shift + I and Shift +O to be the shortcuts for moving to the I/O points when setting a range while previewing a clip prior to adding the range to the timeline as they are listed under the Transport control in the Media Pool.

Oi,

Ctrl + Home ... Ctrl + End :

when there is a selection range that does not involve any visible object, it will definitely not work! It's a bug! Unless the program displays a message that it is not able to navigate to the object that is in a non-visible location! (which doesn't happen!)
In this situation, if you "reset" the selection range (menu edit/markers/Reset selected range) and then press Ctrl + End for example, it will work!

Or if a selection strip incorporates the invisible object, it will work!

Hi,

Both work correctly, no bug.

Ctrl+Home/End are under Edit/Move View. If a range has been set somewhere and the cursor is somewhere else, using Ctrl+Home will move the view to the beginning of the range, centred if possible, but the playback marker stays where it was. Ctrl+End will move the view to the end of the range, centred if possible, but the playback marker stays where it was. This allows you to see where the range is without moving the Playback marker or scrolling along the timeline.

Shift+I/O are under Edit/Markers. Using them will Jump to Range Start/End. This moves the playback marker to the beginning or end of the range and, of course, the view moves to there.

Hi,

Further to the above, here are the illustrations.

In the upper part of the image below, you can see the full timeline with a range set near the beginning. Using Ctrl+Home/End does nothing because of the zoom factor on the timeline. The full timeline is visible, thus the In-point cannot be put at the centre of the screen.

In the lower image, I have zoomed in on the timeline so that the range is no longer visible.

In the upper part of the image below, I have used Ctrl+Home, which, with the same zoom setting, moves the view to show the in-point of the range in the centre of the screen. The playback markers stays where it was.

In the lower part, Ctrl+End, with the same zoom setting, moves the view to show the out-point of the range in the centre of the screen.

Thus Ctrl+Home/End and Shift+I/O are for different purposes, the former moves the view but not the playback marker, the latter moves the playback marker and the view.

Hi,

I'm sorry I considered it a bug! This situation should have been clarified in the manual, where I couldn't find it due to the structure in which it was written. I had only located the command and under the condition I imagined "Ctrl" would be linked to the playback cursor, which is not true.

Hi,

You asked a good question! I had never used  Ctrl+Home/End, only Shift+I/O so I didn't know what Ctrl+Home/End actually did until you brought it up. I have learned something new and useful.

To make my work easier, I create a more simplified and practical manual. I use a manual editor (https://www.helpsmith.com/)

The manual has many omissions or bits left over from previous manuals that no longer seem to apply.

For instance you can assign any object on the timeline a custom colour of your choosing. I sometimes use that to see audio file volume curves more easily.
