Hi John CB

I tested one about 5-6 years ago with Final Cut - and, IMO, it was nice to have, however, the only way I could use it effectively was to work with the shuttle under one hand and the mouse in the other - I am fairly ambidextrous which helped, however in the end I decided not to get one.

Hi John EB,

Thanks for your reply. It seems that MEP and VPX Shuttlepro users are rare . I found out about this because of the German tutorial about how to add more commands by using one button to switch to another level. I also noticed that some Vegas users swear by it, Grazie, being one.

It doesn't replace the mouse, but should replace having to use most common keyboard shortcuts. I'm left-handed, but use my right hand for the mouse, left for the keyboard. I, too, am quite ambidextrous. I just have a tendency hit the wrong keys occasionally.

I thought that it would make a good Birthday present, but I'm rethinking that.

Anyone else?

Thanks,

John CB

I received my new ShuttlePro V2 and have been playing around with it, setting the keys/shortcuts and macros for my workflow. It comes with a preset of shortcuts for VPX7, which worked with VPX9. I managed to figure out how to switch to the different levels. The tutorial on the German forum was not as clear as it could be, but I succeeded. I now have 4 levels:

  • Base level for playing, setting ranges, etc.
  • Edit
  • Effects
  • Import

and there are files to be able to annotate the buttons diagram.

I also tried it with MusicMaker.

Now to start using it.

Hi John EB,

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I'm older, no wiser.

Here is the first round of button mapping. I have 4 levels. Where it says "Switch to previous level" and "Switch to next level" switches to a different layout. A message pops up at the lower right indicating the level that has become active. It seems that I am not always in the base level when the program opens, so I have to press the button to find out. Now I have to test these to see if they work for me. I don't have an undo button as it is always on the screen. The main idea is to try to keep from using the keyboard for most used shortcuts and keys, and to have available on buttons commands that are buried in menus. The main exception is mouse modes, which I programmed on the Edit level. I switch often and it would seem to be easier to just press the button on the Shuttlepro rather than click on the button on the screen. Time will tell.

It's possible to program in macros. I made one to get a favourite caption but removed it as I didn't make a level for titles and I used up all other buttons.

Note that some of the buttons are the same on all or more than one level. I did this as I thought that I would use these in each of the levels.

I'm wondering about playback. There is the spacebar (start/stop), L (start), K (stop) but also + (playback range). I'll probably just use the spacebar and replace L by +, and remove K.

There is one shortcut or command that I could not find in the shortcut list, "Insert still image at the playback marker." Do you see it anywhere on the list?

On the Edit level, I have "Insert still image in range" and "Fill blank space in range," but I really want to insert the still image at the playback marker. I created the shortcuts in VPX for these.

Hi John EB,

Thanks for taking a look. I changed a button from "Fill blank space" to "Insert space in range" shortcut C. I've never used either as I didn't know they existed.

After posting yesterday, I worked on the button mapping and made some changes to all. I freed up 2 buttons on the Effects level, and am now looking for something useful to put there.

Update on use: I'm getting somewhat used to the ShuttlePro, but my hand is often dropping to the keyboard by habit. I have noticed in editing the latest tutorials, that my Levels need some tweaking as I am going back and forth between Edit and Effects. I have Insert still image in range on the Effects level, needs to be on Edit level.

I would really like to have the possibility for a shortcut for "Insert still image at playback marker" but it is not on the list in the Shortcuts of the program.

I creating the 4 levels, I copied the original default version a couple of times, then modified the button mapping. I was editing and used the "Set in point" button and half of my project disappeared. Undo. Checked to make sure that I was on the right level, and later on did it again. This time the whole project disappeared. Frustrated that the ShuttlePro was not working properly, I finally checked the button mapping and found that I had forgotten to remap this button and it was still "Cut range."

Overall, I have found that basic editing is a lot quicker with the ShuttlePro.

Update on ShuttlePro use.

I brought the ShuttlePro with me while travelling and I've been using it with my laptop (Surface Pro 4). Since the screen size is small, I've been working with one of the windows full-screen, like the Project Window putting together a multi-track collage.

In this particular case, shown below, I have the Project Window open and the Effects window overtop - moveable. I didn't know that this could be done, I've used this only with the Preview monitor. I have 2 buttons on the ShuttlePro under the Effects level, to open Effects to Brightness/Contrast and to Size/Position. When I go into full-screen Project Window, I just have to press on a button to get the effects overlay window, without having to remember the shortcut.

Also under Effects, I have copy and paste effects buttons; very useful. And I have buttons for the Edit Trimmer and Object Trimmer. I can very quickly ajust the length of transitions and fades to frame accuracy.

OT: In the above image of a collage template that I've made, I have a 15 frame fadeout of the images. For some reason, the fades are not working when I use the collage.

However, the transitions are all Pixelan 3-D Six-Pack, and a variant of page-turning. There are 4 different ones, each one flying off to the side, left or right, towards the top or bottom, depending on the position of the photo.

I was surprised that this worked.

Update for anyone using the ShuttlePro:

After a lot of use of the ShuttlePro, I found that I needed a better button mapping that combined editing and effects, so I created an additional mapping. I found that if there was an easily accessible button on the screen, then better to use the mouse and free up a button on the ShuttlePro. For the combined mapping, the mouse modes are gone, as are shortcuts to some Effects screens. I don't use the Object Trimmer all that much for adjusting fades, but I do use the Edit Trimmer a lot.

Here is the mapping for Edit & Effects:

I changed the last position of outer ring to be Home and End, thus I can remove Home as one of the buttons. The only problem is with End - releasing the outer ring causes the playback marker to continue a little farther than the end.

The others have changed from what I posted before and after more review, they may change again. I will post them when I am happy with the mapping.

Hi John

As you know I got the Shuttle Express version, and after using it for 3 1/2 months I have not made any changes to the default button actions.

The one annoying thing with it is if you have a Logitech keyboard and mouse. The Outer shuttle ring turns number lock on/of every time you use it. This is a known issue with the Logitech Setpoint Event Manager is intercepting the action - I have disabled mine as I do not have customised mouse button settings and DPI.

. . . . I don't use the Object Trimmer all that much for adjusting fades, but I do use the Edit Trimmer a lot . . . .

I use the Object Trimmer regularly and the Edit trimmer rarely so I have switched the keyboard shortcuts for speed of use.

I don't have a Logitech mouse anymore, so I haven't had this problem. That would be very annoying with the Shuttle Pro.

I have been trying to avoid using the keyboard for shortcuts, except in rare occasions, thus my setup is guided by that. I eliminated 2 of my templates - replacing Edit and Effects by one template, which leaves 3. This is better than the 4 that I had. I'm getting to the optimal solution for me, I think.

Not sure it's worth the price when you can use something like a G13 on the cheap or a Razer Tartarus and just bind it for the NLE. JKL on the middle 3 keys and then the other functionality (switching mouse modes, etc.) elsewhere.

That's cheaper.

Logitech has newer software for their newer keyboards and mice. The older Logitech Gaming software is awful. I have a Logitech mouse that I never use.

I use a Naga + Tartarus. I can bind about 33+ functions across the two of them (a ton more if I use shifts to switch between maps within a profile). They last forever (for me), and work for all types of applications (and games, naturally). My old Nostromo N52 from 2006 still works (on Windows) :-P

browj2 wrote on 5/10/2019, 11:32 AM

@Former user

Interesting alternatives! If I were a gamer, then the ShuttlePro would be less interesting.

The major differences that I see between the G13 and the Razer Tartarus vs the ShuttlePro v2 are the two jog wheels and their placement on the ShuttlePro2. I use both extensively for editing. I had 4 banks (profile switches), now reduced to 3, and one gets extensive use. I also use it for MusicMaker, Samplitude and Xara, but not much yet.

The ShuttlePro V2 is now selling from Contour at 99$.

I'm late to this party, but hopefully this will help anyone stumbling across this thread looking for a solution.

I'm a long time user of the Shuttle Pro, but I actually only use the shuttle and jog rings. For the first time ever I have just experienced the numlock issue mentioned by @johnebaker in an earlier post. The only thing that has changed on my system in the last week (that I am aware of) is the Logi Options app updated to v 1.76.583666. I've used a Logitech wireless mouse for years, but I've never had this happen until this morning.

Anyway, to prevent the outer shuttle ring from activating the numlock notification every time, you simply have to go into Logi Options, settings, and scroll down to Caps lock, Num lock, Scroll lock and Fn lock notifications and uncheck it. I don't know what's going on under the hood, and whether the Shuttle is actuallly activating numlock or just displaying the notification, but it's only a momentary thing, which clears when the shuttle springs back to the detente position, so it should have no effect on operation. I believe this issue only affects people using a Logitech mouse and/or keyboard.

Hi

. . . . numlock issue . . . .

There is a newer discussion which mentions the Shuttle here.

WRT the numlock issue, this was on Windows 10 with Logitech SetPoint installed.

I am now on Windows 11 and still use Logitech keyboard, mouse and tracker ball, the old ones being replaced in 2020 - 2021, and do not have Logitech Options software installed, the numlock issue has never returned since moving up to Windows 11, which was a clean install and full system rebuild.

Thanks John. Actually I did come across that thread, but it didn't specifically refer to the numlock issue, hence posting here.

I think Setpoint is the predecessor to Options (and it was not installed on my system). I've just uninstalled Options as it doesn't add anything for me. I'm not sure the upgrade to Win 11 would have any effect, rather the non-installation of Setpoint/Options. Cheers.
