cinema widescreen ratio 21:9

@johnebaker

Still not with you, John. On the one hand you say they have to be divisible by 4 but on the other you say 1634 is OK depending on the AR.

Try this: set up your movie settings 3840x1634, AR = 3840:1634 ie 2.3500, then go to the Export screen and click on the resolution three dots, then click OK. In MEP (and VPX, as I've since discovered), my 1634 changes to 1632. I cannot export as 1634, unless I don't touch the resolution.

It's as though Magix knows something's wrong but doesn't do anything about it unless you click on the resolution 3 dots. And changing the export ratio has no bearing on the resolution; I can happily export 3840x1634 at 16-9, but as soon as I click on the resolution 3 dots, in goes 1632.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

. . . . On the one hand you say they have to be divisible by 4 . . . .

I am not sure where I got this from as it was quite a long while ago, however IIRC it was to eliminate possible edge effects.

Without going down the Macro block, Transform block, Prediction block and the maths involved rabbit hole - it is very deep - h.264 and h.265 have a minimum transform block size of 4 x 4 and it is best to ensure that the resolution is multiple of a whole transform block.

. . . . Try this: . . . .

Agreed - tested in VPX 14 (20.0.1.159), MEP 2021 (20.0.1.80), MEP 2022 (21.0.2.138) - the programs are obeying the division by 4 rule

Is there any chance the resolution of the exports is being misread in some instances?

@CubeAce

Hi Ray

I do not think so - I also tried the test @AAProds suggested and the rule of 4 is being obeyed, eg set a height of 1648 and repeat the export test - it drops to 1636 - the next multiple of 4.

However if you do the settings in the correct order you can force the non 4 multiple resolution.

MediaInfo, VLC etc are indicating the resolution and AR are correct.

Arrgh, I just realised we're in the VPX sub-forum. You should be able to set 1634 for export as I mentioned above.

We still need to know what you're trying to achieve with your video though: black side bars, stretched or cropped top and bottom.

Thank you guys so much for your expertise. Actually I just liked the 21:9 look for landscape drone shots. So I guess these horizontal bars dont really bother me. I red that on a 21:9 screen you don't have the bars, when your on a 16:9 you have the bars, which is logical I guess.. Why is it that magix gives us 8K and other special things, but a 21:9 aspect ratio is not directly easily to find. Why don't they put this ratio in the exportsettings..?

Probably because it would not be a common viewing size. Even my phone is only 2.2:1.

After you've set up your first export, you can save the settings as a Preset for later by clicking on the floppy disk icon:
