@Brian-Pitts

Hi

The easiest way is to use the J, K, L keyboard shortcuts for play reverse, stop, play forward respectively.

Successive presses of the L ( J) key will increment the forward (reverse) playback speed

Repeated J (L) key will incrementally slow down fast forward (reverse) playback, and eventually increase playback speed in the opposite direction.

K Stops playback.

I would suggest you play with these to get used to their actions.

Thank you both! I did need to enable the setting, so thank you @Gid for the screenshot, and the keyboard shortcuts are very helpful @johnebaker. This gets me partway there, but unfortunately, it mutes the audio so that I can't hear the discussions I need to mark. Is there any way to enable sound playback with this feature, or am I just out of luck on this front? Thanks again!

Turn on Scrubbing long - click the small speaker icon right end of the toolbare above the timeline - see image below, this works better using the Jog/Shuttle controls or dragging the timeline cursor.

John, I had to get a cup of tea and read that a few times before it sunk it! 😂🙂

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

@Brian-Pitts @Gid @johnebaker @AAProds

The main problem for me at least with listening to such sped up (or slowed down) audio in MMS or VPX is the audio comes in short audible blocks at normal playback pitch, truncated when sped up to fit the playback speed (so bits of the audio is missing) and repeated when slowed down that can make it difficult to follow or understand.

Also for finding the frame where a specific vowel or consonant is located becomes almost impossible just by scrolling back and forth. That is slightly easier to locate setting the audio scroll playback to 1 frame but even harder to understand during faster scrolling.

Depending on your work flow and what is important, Vegas in that respect behaves more like a daw during scrolling back and forth and is more analogue like in it's sound reproduction and is smooth and continuous in its audio performance and increases/decreases in pitch during scrolling instead. I find that more usable personally for that user case mode. It would depend on how you edit and listen to your audio.

Ray.

I had to rewrite that several times to get a concise explanation of how that works without ending up with a full 'War & Peace'.

I agree this is a problem, hence my suggestion to scrub using the Jog/Shuttle controls or dragging the timeline cursor.

If you are doing a lot of these kind of videos, I would highly recommend getting a Contour Shuttle, I have the small xPress version, another user @browj2 has the bigger Shuttle and may chip in here, the inner jog dial and dial ring are, IMHO, perfect for this kind of work, all controls actions are customisable.

I have the five buttons set so the centre 3 repeat the J, K and L keys, the outer 2 repeat the Z (trim start) and U (trim end).

This allows me to edit with the Shuttle on my left hand, and the right hand free for other actions eg. changing mouse modes using the keyboard, or using the mouse.

You are correct, mis-name occurred due to working in Vegas Pro, which uses the term 'cursor', just before posting 😟.

Me too decades ago, different area - ISO 9000 series QA/Management procedures. If you got too verbose with them, on inspection/assessment by the Standards inspectors, you were often advised to condense them before being passed and certification issued.

I agree in many circumstances, or out of necessity being verbose is necessary.

@johnebaker thanks so much for the suggestion about the Contour Shuttle, I'll look into those!

@CubeAce thanks for the notes on the limitations of the audio here. I think it will be ok because what I'm trying to do at this point is just flag the general point of certain content. It doesn't need to be precice, I just need need to be able to identify general point of certain topics in multi-hour presentations, and I don't want to have to re-experience the video in real-time if I have to 😀😀
