I do not have both choices:

As you have already bought the software there is no reason not to register/activate it.
You can install the software on as many computers as you wish, however you can only have 2 active installations, to activate a third installation you would have to de-activate one of the 2 current working ones.
This way you can fully test the updated software, and yes it is Windows 10 compatible.
