Blu ray disk chapters blank

karataka wrote on 11/23/2024, 6:51 AM

Hi there,

I burned a blu-ray disk ISO with menu. If I play the disk it works as expected, but If I select one chapter from the menu, I see a black screen an just the audio. Tested with VLC and real blu-ray player.

If I burn a DVD, it works as expected. If I select a chapter from the menu I see video and audio

How strange!

Any help?

Cheers

@karataka

Hi

We need more information:

  • Movie Studio version and patch number - see under Help, About...

  • which disk template was used for creating the disk?

Can post screenshots of the following:

  • the timeline, we need to see the entire length of the timline, click the options shown below to get full screen timeline view and full width. If necessary blur out the 'preview images on the video/image objects

  • the disk creation screen in Edit mode as shown below

  • which preset are you using in the Burn dialog - BluRay or AVCHD and in the following dialog which video format Mpeg 2 or h.264?

. . . . real blu-ray player . . . .

Assuming you mean you burned the ISO to disc and tested in a BD player, what make and type of disc did you use and how did you burn the ISO image to disc?

VLC is not, IMHO, a good program to test BD ISO images with, I have found many issues with it, I use PowerDVD 22 which is BluRay standard compliant.

@johnebaker

Here is the timeline

Let me explain again.

If I generate a DVD ISO everything works in VLC. If I burn the BD (I use Nero) an play in a real Panasonic blu-ray player attached to my TV I can select any chapter from the Menu and play it.

If I generate a BD ISO in VLC and real Panasonic blu-ray player, I can see the video only if I play from the start. If I select a chapter from the Menu, I see a black screen (video doen't start) but I am able to hear the audio.

In the simulation inside MS it works correctly.

I am using Purple Glass template.

I burned info BD RE..

I sucessfully used this process with PowerDirectory many times... This is my first experience with MS....... IMHO Not a good start...

Cheers

Hi @johnebaker

one more thing. If I import the DVD ISO with Handbrake everything works. If I try to import the BD I have this error.

HTH

@karataka

Hi

. . . . Let me explain again. . . .

What the DVD does is only relevant in so far as the issue would appear to be not related to the video/audio formats on the timeline, this was concluded from your original post.

Therefore the issue is either:

  1. The timeline layout you are using, from your timeline image it looks like you are following the Power Director timeline layout, for adding media, which is 'bottom up', in theory the layout you have used in Movie Studio 'should' work for a single video track, however it is not the conventional layout that is used in Movie Studio.

    Movie Studio is 'top down' ie track 1 is the lowest layer ie contains the background video/images, video images - you can best see this by loading the Magix Demo project.

  2. . . . . I burned info BD RE . . . .
    Do you mean as a data disc? if so then this will not work

  3. Try the following to eliminate layout as being an issue:

    Move the audio on track 1 to track 5.

    Move the video (MP4) and its associated audio to tracks 1 and 2.

    Burn a Bluray image use the h.264 option for the encoding format - do not change any other burn settings.

    Added:  if you get the message shown below select Encode all.

  4. To eliminate Nero as the cause of the issue

    Once you have created the ISO file, using Windows Explorer right click the file and select, Show more options if necessary, then Burn to disc.

Hi @johnebaker

I don't want to be rude but I am more than 30 years of software engineer so I am aware the difference between burning an ISO or a data DVD (your point 2). I made several DVD and BD with PowerDirector so I consider myself confident on various workflow.

I tried your suggestion on point 3 and I have the same problem. Let me clarify that the problem is visible in VLC, PowerDVD and real phisical disc.

Step 1: I insert the disc and I see the menu:

Step 2: I press play and I see video and audio as expected

Step 3: Eject the BD and start from scratch again. Insert the disc and go to the chapter

Step 4: Select any of the chapter. Result is that I see a black screen and the audio start normally.

Hence: Houston we have a problem.

These are my considerations: It is not a layout problem as I tested with your suggestion. I inspected the BD with BDedit and for what is see the MPLS generated seems not correct. I have about 30 chapters...

I will try to see how it works with mpeg2

Cheers

Update:apparently "jump to a chapter" works as expected for a mpeg2. Bug?

@karataka

Hi

. . . . Update:apparently "jump to a chapter" works as expected for a mpeg2. Bug? . . . .

I doubt very much that it is a bug, the only change is the video format and the 'in points' of the chapters which are time based and are not embedded in the video stream

During testing a 30 chaptered test project I did discover a possible bug while working on the chapters, however, deliberately recreating what I saw happen did not stop the chapters video playing in the burned disc.

One question I forgot to ask is when playing a chapter, is the audio playing correct for the chapter?

For comparison, below is the BDedit data of a 30 chapter BD disc encoded h.264 made with MMS 2025, all burn settings were default. The chapters play fine with the correct video and audio in VLC, PowerDVD and on my Sony BD player.

In the mpls section (right image) you can see there is the main movie stream 00000.mpls, the main menu 00001mpls and 5 chapter menus 00002 - 00006.mpls.

The corresponding MTS files on disc are shown below

Side note:

When editing the menu pages particularly Chapter menus, and placing more than 12 chapters per page, I have had issues with some templates, though not the 'no video' one you are having.

The best template I have found for editing is Red Smoke.
