Best codec for editing in Video Pro X6

Just imported a 32Mbps Mpeg4 (H.264) video onto my 1080p23.976 timeline.  Looks great but causing stuttering.  I've streamlined the playback as much as possible, the CPU is only at 17%, so I guess the codec is just too heavy.  So I'm wondering...

1. Is it best to import in the offered Proxy file format?  I'm afraid it will look a bit blurry, even though it may flow fine?

2. Should I convert my file to an 'editing' format?  Which one works best in VPX6?  ProRes?  M-Jpeg?

Details greatly appreciated!

Stuttering is most likely because you are not using proxy files, which are the best format to use - they are a reduced resolution less compressed format converted from the original.

VPX is a non destructive video editor, the project file only contains instructions on which images, sections of video files files are loaded to the timeline, what effects are applied, titles etc.

The proxy files are used for the editing only, when you export or burn a disc the original files are used.

Within the program, when you press 'Y' and go into Video/Audio, there's a box called 'Automatically create frametable during import.  Is that the same as proxy files?

No, that is a completely different function of the program.

Look in the Help file for "proxy files" where you will see much more detail. The "usual" method of creating proxy files is to tick the box to allow VPX to create them as they are imported. I'm pretty sure there is a way of making VPX create them after import but I've forgotten how to do it, sorry!

Hi

The Proxy creation option is in the Project settings - E key.

If you activate this on a project which does not have proxy files, the program will ask you if you want to create them after closing the Project settings dialog
