Audio Level for TV

nirvanray wrote on 5/11/2015, 4:18 AM

Dear friends,

Can someone please guide me what is the best level of audio that I must set in my MEP 18 and also my Dell laptop to have a decent audio output of the final video in my TV (and projectors for clients)?

I am horrible of this aspect and sometims the volume is quite disruptive when we watch in big screens? Ideally I have seen that for movies (in my TV) the level of 50 to 60 with the remote is best.

Any suggestions please.

Regards.

Hi Anirban

I normalise all the audio in all my projects, I then use the Melda Productions MDynamic plugin in the mixer to compress the audio down to -6dB.

This appears to be the best level for me consistent with maintaining a decent sound level.

Some will say you should set the audio to 0dB, however I find that this is too loud particualry when trying to balance audio levels on TV's to that of other devices such as BD or DVD players, satellite receivers etc.

dear John thanks for your answer.

But if I have only MEP 18 and habe no plugins how do I set the standard level in my laptop and the editing software to know that I will get the best output in TV.

For example if I set my laptop bolume level at 50 to 60, the output level is horrible in TV.

Hi Anirban

You can use the Compressor effect in the Mixer to reduce the levels of the audio as shown below

Audio before compression -

  Higher resolution here

As you can at 1 and 2 the audio is peaking into the yellow with a maximum of 0 dB

Open the mixer - M key - select the master FX button (3) and adjust the gain on the compressor (4) to -6 dB

Here is the same audio after compression

   Higher resolution here

As you can see the audio level (1) is still in the yellow but at (2) the volume is now peaking at -6 dB.

I prefer the MDynamic Equaliser as it maintains more clarity in the compressed audio and is tunable over the audio frequency spectrum - this is a plugin that must be purchased - if you decide to look at the plugin keep looking on their website - they often have 50% off selected plugins

Hi friends!

I recently updated Pro X to Video Pro X8.

It has got a new option in addition to the standard Normalization, called "Normalization (EBU R128)". Magix has made this a fully automated option without any adjustable parameters, which is quite smart, as this standard is pretty complex to understand for untrained people - like myself.

(EBU R128 is the laudness standard requested for productions to all the major european TV-stations. The purpose of the standard is to ensure equal loudness-levels for all tv-productions.)

Maybe this could solve the problem raised by nirvanray.

Hi

May I just sugest that John B close the threads, when no more comments are accepted.

Just thoigt my note on the Video Pro X8 might be of some relevance to the problem.

Best regars

@videoleif,

As John EB mentioned, it's not a good idea to reopen old threads discussing old versions, unless it is very pertinent. Thus when not, the trick is to start a new thread, link to an old one and mention what is new or whatever. And, don't worry about making a thread just pointing out a new feature, what it does and how to use it.

Your mention of the new normalize feature, EBU R128, is a good topic in itself, so I will open a new thread about normalizing.

I don't think there is any way to close threads in this forum, but the new feature "Resolved" can be used, by the OP only, I think. This feature was not available before. Even then, one can still keep the thread going.
