Archiving many DVDs & reading files w/ Media Reader

I have a several part problem. Working with a high school, we make about over 50 DVDs a year. We would like to have access to the material years from know, but the DVDs might be degraded, damaged or not returned when borrowed. These are not copy protected recordings so not need to "rip" - simply backup the material.
If backed up to a hard drives, it would make duplicating lots of material easy. Does anyone have a recommendation of the best way to go about this?
Secondly, if the type of file you suggest could be played on a "media reader", it would be helpful.
Also any recommendations for media readers?

If you choose -- file, export movie, video as avi (or mp3) it will save the movie in the location directed to in the "files" box mid way down the window. Then just save it. An avi or mp3 can be viewed on most media players on your computer. I do this after I have burnt a DVD to archive the movies I make for several theater companies I work with.
