Activate Mpeg 4 Codec in Movie Studio 2025 Platinum

William-Keeth wrote on 4/9/2025, 9:35 PM

I could load, edit, and save MP4s. Then, suddenly Movie studio 2025 stopped working like normal and asked me to activate the Mpeg 4 codec. I couldn't do it and got this message: "The activation of MPEG-4-Codec failed. If you are using the program as a guest, please repeat the activation procedure with administrator rights."

I tried to activate as an administrator with my antivirus disactivated. It did not work. Then, I uninstalled the program, deleted all of the directories related to it, and installed it again. It will activate the program but not the Mpeg-4 codec.

There has to be simple solution.

Someone help me, please.

@William-Keeth

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

Has anything changed on your computer since you were last able to use the mp4 codec? e.g. a Windows update or even changing the OS completely, from Win 10 to Win 11?

Two things you write need a little more detail from you, I think:

  1. Disabling your antivirus was a good move but did you also temporarily disable your firewall?
  2. How, exactly, did you try to activate as administrator? Was it by right-clicking on the program icon on your desktop and choosing the option to "Run as administrator"?

If you did all the above and the activation still failed (I confess I am very puzzled as to why you were previously able to work with mp4 files but now cannot) I think you need to contact infoservice@magix.net to ask whether there is a problem with the activation server, and/or create a Support Ticket (use the Support header from any forum page) read carefully through each subsequent page, always choosing the option to Ask Support or Email Support.

Hi

In addition to @emmrecs comment.

Does the popup occur when opening an existing project, or when adding video to the timeline?

If when adding to the timeline, are the videos from a new source or videos that could be previously imported?

. . . MP4s . . . .

MP4 is not a 'video format', it is a container file format that can contain several different video and audio encoding formats, eg:

  • video: h.264 (AVC), h.265 (HEVC) and many more

  • audio: AAC, AC3 (stereo and surround sound)and several more.

@emmrecs I did all of the above and it failed.

@johnebaker It won't work for a new file and when I open the demo file I cannot add a MP4 because it repeats the failure to activate the codec. I deleted all old files when I cleared the system of anything MS2025 related.

Hi

. . . . It won't work for a new file . . . .

We need to know the file format and encoding you are working with.

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse the video file you are trying to import and post the results, see this tutorial on how to set up MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

MP4 is not a 'video format',

John, the issue seems to be that the standard "MPEG 4 activation" is not working (quite a few occurrences over the years), as opposed to some odd type of MP4.

I'll throw this into the ring. John, you might like to assist with the "Registrar Home 8" program, although I'm not sure it's needed. That key can easily be found just using Regedit. I have that key on my system.

It may be, then again we have been caught out with 'non standard' combinations of video/audio codecs in 'MP4' videos before.

Until we know for certain the video encoding, diving into the registry is, IMHO, the last option to try.

@AAProds I cannot import or export any MP4 file anymore in Magix Movie Studio 2025. For what it is worth, thought, here's a copy of the last file I tried to import.

FYI--I edit 60 plus oral recordings from my students each week. I had no problem until recently. Honestly, I doubt it is one of them. What is more, I cannot import any of the videos that I previously created with MS2025 and sent back to my students. And, I cannot even create a MP4 file using simple pictures or text.

@johnebaker Here's what MediaInfo reports for the file @AAProds requested:

Container and general information
MPEG-4 (Base Media Version MiB, 1 min 24 s
1 video stream: AVC
1 audio stream: AAC LC
First video stream
Encoded date: 2023-01-30 01 UTC
Tagged date: 2023-01-30 01 UTC
English, 3 210 kbis, 1280*720 (1 6:9), at 29.970 (30000/1001) FPS,AVC (NTSC) (Baseline@L3.2) (3 Ref Frames)
First audio stream
English, 192 kb/s, 48.0 kHz 2 channels, AAC LC

Just in case, this is the report for the MP4 feedback videos that I create and send to my students:

Container and general information
MPEG-4 (Base Media): 1.96 MiB, 1 min 14s
1 video stream: HEVC
I audio stream:AAC LC
First video stream
125 kbis, 1920*1080 (1 6:9), at 25.000 FPS, HEVC (Component)
First audio stream
89.3 kbis, 48.0 2 channels, AACLC
Writing application: Lavf61.7.IOO

FYI My students record their videos using Zoom. Essentially they answer questions to a randomized PowerPoint slide show in Spanish. I see the question and a small video window with them answering.

Hi.

Thanks for the file download. I have tested and now deleted it from my system.

The file did not present any problems with loading into my copy of MMS 2024 or VPX, or with playing or exporting the file. Conclusion must be something has changed either with the program becoming corrupt or Windows is corrupt or an operating system setting or anti virus setting needs changing.

If the program was running earlier then we may assume the computer specs are sufficient. This may become a 20 questions type of topic to get to the bottom of.

Hi

Thanks for the MediaInfo data from which it looks like you may have 2 issues as the video encoding of the 2 files analysed are different video encoding format, using different video encoders, ie AVC (h.264) and HEVC (h.265)

Like @CubeAce and @AAProds, I too have no issue importing the video file into MMS2025. The file you supplied is 'standard' in all respects.

However, the HEVC/AAC encoded recording appears to have been modified after export from MMS.

From the MediaInfo data of the second file analysed

First video stream
125 kbis, 1920*1080 (1 6:9), at 25.000 FPS, HEVC (Component)

Writing application: Lavf61.7.IOO this is a FFMpeg encoder version number, MMS does not use FFMpeg.

Hopefully the highlighted bitrate is a typo.  If not, then this bitrate for a FullHD video is very low, if this were a download from Zoom I would have expected a bitrate of ~1200 kbs (1.2Mbs).

Is this file a MMS export that has been uploaded to Zoom and then downloaded again, or been through a video converter before uploading to Zoom?

To eliminate some potential causes of this issue:

  • Do you have any of the 'All-in-one' codec packs, eg K-Lite', installed on the PC.

  • What are the processor and graphics card(s) makes/models, please quote in full?.

  • What are the version numbers of the graphic card(s) drivers.

  • Can you post a screenshot of the program settings, Device options tab

Can I just mention something & I've no idea if it makes any difference.

I too have no problem with that file, I tested it in MMS & got a single video track just like @CubeAce shows. I then tested it in VP to see if it told me anything more, this time it gave video & audio, I remember noting this, so I checked MediaInfo (backwards analysis I know) & saw it did have an audio track. I've been out so an hr or so later - I just opened that file again in MMS & it too now has an audio track.. ?

Ray.
