A question for users of the new VPX (8)

emmrecs wrote on 4/26/2016, 3:41 AM

This indirectly follows on from the problems outlined in http://www.magix.info/uk/anyone-else-finding-magix-support-somewhat-lacking.forum.1166106.html

I think there is agreement (between MAGIX Support and myself) that "something" is causing the graphics problems, quite possibly linked to a Windows 10 update creating "interference" with the latest driver for my graphics card.  We shall see.  (I did install the latest driver update yesterday, but it did not correct the problem).

However, I wonder whether anyone running the full version of VPX 365 (8) can confirm or otherwise for me the following: if you install the "NewBlue ActionCam Package" and the "NewBlue Looks", do you see them listed in the Effects Tab, as MAGIX sales told me should be the case?  For me, they do not appear anywhere, yet both are installed and activated.  Under Effects>Design Elements I do see "Movie looks", is that the NB package?  But what about the ActionCam package?

Any advice/information very gratefully received.

Jeff

Hi Jeff

. . . . I did install the latest driver update yesterday, but it did not correct the problem . . . .

What version of the drivers does the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel utility say you have installed?

I do not know if this is relevant to your other issue, however I had a nagging thought that we had seen the disappearing text problem before so I did some digging and found that the loss of text in the dialogs and buttons has occurred before with Windows 7 and affected several programs, IIRC MEP included  - the cause was corruption of a font file by a Windows update.

These are the action cam filters / effects - as in MEP

Hi John.

Thanks for this. As you may remember (from various other threads in which I've posted about this) I'm actually not using the built-in grahics output but have a dedicated video card, an AMD Radeon R7 360; its utility certainly confirms the latest driver is installed.  I actually dwonloaded and installed it last night.

However, I'm very interested in your research into the disappearance of text problem and the fact that it previously affected Win 7 and was linked to the corruption of a font file.  I run CCleaner quite regularly and I remember it reported a registry error connected with the Carlito.ttf font file.  I checked in the Windows/Fonts folder and Carlito had disappeared; any attempt to resintate it produces an error message "... not a valid font file...".  I did actually ask Bob Braun whether this is the font used on those displays where text is missing but he never gave me an answer.

Can you remember whether that earlier problem with fonts was resolved and how?  I will do some digging around on the MS Win 10 pages and see if I can discover anything there.

So the ActionCam package is actually that set of filters?  VPX 8 is very similar to what you show, maybe one or two additional ones.  I had assumed, apparently wrongly, that there would be an entry "ActionCam", or similar, somewhere in that list.

Thanks again, John.

Just to update this; I've just looked in Windows/Fonts and Carlito IS listed there as being installed.  However, I downloaded the complete font package from https://fontlibrary.org/en/font/carlito unzipped the package and tried to install one of the variants, Regular.  Windows told me it was already installed and did I want to overwrite the existing, I said Yes and immediately received a message that "Carlito.ttf does not appear to be a valid font"!!!

 Now I am confused!

Interesting - I do not have that font installed - AFAICS it is not a standard font that comes with Windows.

Have you tried removing it?

Oops - forgot you had switched to the AMD.

Hi,

I can't help with the disappearing text and I don't have the Carlito font installed. Everything appears to work in VPX for me. However, I have been experiencing strange things with the computer, including Outlook not being able to connect but a reboot or two fixes that, then the next time it doesn't work. I am putting it down to MS trying to annoy me into upgrading to W10 from W7.

Here is my list of NewBlue FX that I have accumulated from the various MEP and VPX6 and VPX7 versions:

I had already asked the same question about ActionCam as nothing with ActionCam showed up. Again, thanks, John EB.

Jeff, do you have what John EB mentioned and more? If so, what? I would like to know if I'm missing something.

Does anyone have proDAD Heroglyph? Mine came with VPX6, shows up in VPX7 and VPX(8), but with the following message:

I click on Start in read mode and it seems to work although it says "limited." I have been tempted to input the license from VPX6 but afraid that it may kill Heroglyph. Do you or John have this? Has anyone resolved this?

I went into my account looking for patches, and strangely, there is no patch listed for VPX even though one showed up in VPX when I went to Update. Jeff, did you by any chance check this?

I presume that you are now at version 15.0.0.83.

Hi John C.B.,

This is the list of NB Effects etc I see installed in VPX8, remembering I do not have 6 or 7 because I've only just gone 64 bit.

I can't answer about Heroglyph because I don't have it.  I used to have the free-standing version but haven't yet reinstalled it.

Yes I am running 15.0.0.83.

Hi John CB

. . . . Does anyone have proDAD Heroglyph . . . .

I have Heroglyph v4  in MEP 2014 - does not show up in MEP 2015 or 2016 , for the obvious reason it is 32 bit.

With earlier versions of MEP  it shows up but I get a similar message as you except is MEP 2014 not VPX 6.

Entering the code does not work, AFAICS the code is version specific.

I do have the stand alone version on my old computer however it is v2.5 from about 2010.

Jeff

In case you haven't figured it out yet, the "Movie looks" that you indicate above are Magix presets. You can see these under: C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Video Pro X\8\VideoEffects\MovieLooks

I inherited from one of the version "Magix Bullet Quick Looks" which, for some reason, shows up under Effects>Extra effects. Do you have this? It is a stripped down version of the one that I have in Pinnacle Studio Ultimate (LooksBuilderSE, I think) and the one that I received with a version of Xara DPX10. Below is a screen shot of the Magic Bullet PhotoLooks with Xara.

This is quite sophisticated compared to QuickLooks, which has no tools, only presets. PhotoLooks would be a really nice addition to MEP/VPX. Note the scopes and graphs.

As I mention in the thread on LUTs, I have Pixelan FilmTouch 2 Pro for colour grading, which also has many tools (but no scopes), and some masking ability. Very nice.

Hi Jeff

In my VPX they appear the same as I posted below for MEP 2016 - at least these are the ones that disappear when I unstall the package and re-appear when installed..

There is an additional filter under Stylizers, however AFAICS this is not part of the ActionCam package.

. . . . "something" is causing the graphics problems . . . .

What happens if you force DirectX 9 use in the program settings?

Hi John EB and John CB.  Thanks for these updates.

@John CB, thanks for the info re Movie Looks.  I think I had sort of figured that out.  Magic Bullet Quick Looks came, I think, with one of the early versions of VPX.  Since the computer new build I have only reinstalled VPX5 so don't now have Quick Looks.  I confess to making little use of it before and I don't really want to reinstall some earlier version (with all the hassle of relocating serial numbers etc.) simply in order to assess one add-on.

Thanks for the heads-up on Pixelan FilmTouch 2 Pro.  I do have a number of Pixelan plugs, but not that one, and I do like what Michael offers, so I shall check it out later today.

@John EB, as reported elsewhere, since the installation of the AMD card and a recent update to Win 10, all those graphics problems have gone away.  FYI, the card uses Direct X 12.

The Magic Bullet Quick Looks is not worth installing, IMHO.

Just to show that we were cheated by not getting the tools to go along with it in the Magix version, here is a complilation of screen shots of the Magic Bullet Looks Builder SE that came with Pinnacle.

No tools with the one in Magix, and I already showed you the one with Xara, which is the one that would be really nice to have for video.
