Possible serious problem with Default mp4 export codec.

emmrecs escrito el 22.11.PM a las 16:26 horas

I have tested this in both VPX and MEP, both latest versions, but it may have happened only after the latest updates to both apps. I'm also aware of a number of other users experiencing problems activating the mp4 codec but, in my case, the codec IS activated and "working".

Some background: the project is a Powerpoint Presentation intended for projection as a timed slideshow on a 75 inch UHD TV screen. It consists of graphics, images and videos (apparently a mixture of mp4s and wmvs - I didn't create the PP) but the whole show has repeatedly crashed Powerpoint on a pretty highly specced PC, mine (details in my signature). As a result I have exported the whole presentation from Powerpoint, using the "Save as ..." option, to create an mp4 video file, 1920 x 1080, 29.97fps (so "NTFS", presumably because it was created by an American program).

Testing the exported file I discovered that some of the audio (music tracks) for the presentation exported with audible glitches, so I opened the mp4 in VPX (also tested with MEP) and imported .wav files of the affected music, obviously substituting them for the affected sections of the original audio. Everything played perfectly on the timeline.

I then selected to "Export movie as mp4", using the Default codec and the identical settings to those in the source file, 1920 x 1080, 29.97fps. The only audio codec offered was AAC (not possible to change it), ran the exported file and the audio was running ahead of the video. e.g. there is a person speaking to camera at about 1 minute 30 seconds into the 16 minute, 30 second video. The audio for this speech started almost exactly 20 seconds before the picture! Suffice to say that no amount of "editing" of the VPX project, including moving ALL the audio tracks to start 20 seconds later, allowed the audio to sync to the video. I repeated the export in MEP Premium, with the identical result!

After much trial and error, with no improvement and since I do have the Main Concept mp4 codec installed, though very rarely used, I decided to switch to it. I then restarted the program, re-opened the project (with the audio tracks no longer set to start 20 seconds after the video), chose the same Export (again with all settings as above, including AAC audio) and the resulting file, though showing some deterioration in video quality, played audio and video in perfect sync throughout!

I realise that a Powerpoint Slide Show is a somewhat "unusual" source for a video edit but I wonder whether any other user has met this problem when exporting to mp4, using the Default codec? If so, and you have access to the MC codec, does it solve the problem for you? If this is a problem affecting other users as well, I will raise a support ticket with Magix since, on my system at least, there seems to be a major problem with mp4 export and the Default codec.

Hi Jeff

I have been doing some quick testing with PPT video and other video and have found the following:

  1. exporting at 29.97 fps has an issue - audio leads the visuals

  2. replacing the audio - audio leads the visuals

  3. exporting as 25 fps - visuals and audio are in sync.

  4. with other mp4 video and audio eporting at 29.97 fps - audio leads the visuals.

  5. with other mp4 video and audio at 25fps - visuals and audio are in sync.

Looks like there is an issue exporting at 29.97 fps.

Hi John.

Many thanks for confirming the problem, and for the "workaround".

Clearly I can avoid the problem by using the MC codec for export in this situation but I guess the problem essentially seems to stem from the fact that export from PP defaults to 29.97fps. Is there a way that one can set this, within PP, to be 25? Or is this another case for Movavi, or similar? (I see Movavi have released a "new" version; haven't updated yet and may not do so.)

Will you report this issue to Magix? I'll also do the same. but I won't be able to do so until much later today.

Hi Jeff

Forgot to mention tested with MEP 18.0.1.209 so is not a new issue with .213 (cannot update to .213 Internet is too slow here!!!).

. . . . Is there a way that one can set this, within PP, to be 25? Or is this another case for Movavi, or similar? . . .

AFAICS no - tried MOVAVI conversion, however still get the same results - looks like an issue is with MEP and exporting at 29.97 fps.

Agree that there is something completely messed-up with the MP4 render. 1) I'm getting a black screen in places where video should be (H.265) . 2) Poor quality output when UHD H.265 is down-scaled to 1080P on export. 3) Failed encoding when hardware acceleration is selected (Use Nvidia GeForce 770M in laptop). 4) Hung-up encoding (frozen) when trying to export UHD H.265 video as MP4 at 3840 x 2160. I have a simple 4-min video that I'm just trying to render to upload to VIMEO and I'm going nuts,

@PsychotropicFilms

Hi

Check the NVidia 770M GPU code name - if it is GK104 or GK106 then:

  1. . . . . Nvidia GeForce 770M in laptop . . . . .

Looking at the NVidia GPU support matrix the GK104 or GK 106, GPU does not support h.265 or NVENC.

  2. Poor quality output when UHD H.265 is down-scaled to 1080P on export . . . .

What is the device resolution you are seeing this on, is the 1080P h.264 encoded and what are the 'quality' issues being experienced?

  3. . . . . Failed encoding when hardware acceleration is selected . . . .

    Do you mean:

    a) VPX reverts to software encoding
    or
    b) the encoding process fails totally?

If a - and the NVidia drivers are up to date then there will be no Hardware Acceleration due to lack of 'CUDA', ie the NVCUVENC support - this was dropped by NVidia several years ago, VPX should revert to 'software' encoding.

  4. . . . . Hung-up encoding (frozen) when trying to export UHD H.265 video as MP4 at 3840 x 2160 . . . .

    See 3.

So are you saying that if the NVIDIA 770M GPU in my laptop does not support, then I should not select "Hardware Acceleration" and allow the software to do the encoding (?). I saw that a VPX dialog box opened when I imported H.265 video, asking if I wanted to download the H.265 CODEC, which I acknowledged and thus it was installed in software.

My other option is to BACKUP the entire program (Project file & Media) and move the film project to my 6-core CPU desktop which has a NVIDIA QUADRO P2000 which has H.265 (HEVC) built-in the GPU hardware.

Actually, I tried moving a backup of the project over to my desktop and when I loaded the project file the program crashed after 90% loading. So I'm going to have to try to figure that one out also. But if successful, it may be the way to go. Thanks. Bart

Returning, somewhat belatedly, to the original question in this thread, in order to update it and to provide information to any other user seeing this problem and needing a resolution.

I raised a Support Ticket about this and, after a delay, eventually received a reply, asking me to send the MVP project file, the source mp4 and my exported mp4, along with a screenshot of the export settings. Support was able to replicate the problem and find the solution. It seems that, by default, both VPX and MEP choose an export frame rate of 29.9714 fps. Simply changing that to the rather more "standard" 29.97 keeps the audio and video in sync in the exported file.

Hi

. . . . It seems that, by default, both VPX and MEP choose an export frame rate of 29.9714 fps . . . .

I am slightly confused by that, it looks like that the Adjust movie . . . . option is recalculating the fps from the PPT video and not getting it right. The work around for me is not to click the Adjust movie on importing the PPT file.

I found this by doing the following

Can you replicate this by trying the following:

  1. Start with a NTSC 29.97fps 1920 x 1080 setting and import the Powerpoint file - you should get the Active movie . . . . message.

Click Adjust option and then view the project settings - you should find that it is now 29.9714.

Export as MP4 and you should get User defined at 29.9714 fps and audio is out of sync

  2. Start with a NTSC 29.97fps 1920 x 1080 setting and import the Powerpoint file - you should get the Active movie . . . . message.

Click Do not adjust option and then view the project settings - you should find that it is still 29.97 fps

Export as MP4 and you should get AVCHD transport stream . . at 29.97 fps and the audio is in sync

  3. Start with a PAL 25.0fps 1920 x 1080 setting and import the Powerpoint file - you should get the Active movie . . . . message.

Click Do not adjust option and then view the project settings - you should find that it is still 25.0 fps

Export as MP4 NTSC at 29.97 fps and the audio is in sync

This is the MediaIinfo from a PPT video clip

General
Complete name                     : W:\MAGIX\DVD_BD_Projects\Test Projects\Powerpoint\Test video.mp4

Video

Width                                    : 1 920 pixels
Height                                   : 1 080 pixels
Display aspect ratio               : 16:9
Frame rate mode                    : Variable
Frame rate                               : 30.271 FPS
Minimum frame rate                       : 15.151 FPS
Maximum frame rate                       : 30.332 FPS

In this example PPT video, according to MI the average fps is 30.271 fps , on importing to MEP it is 'calculated' as 29.9712 fps.
