Hi Ray

. . . . My concern over the editing window is not about the view I can get but where and how the image is generated as the viewing window never gives a full screen view and is effectively working with an already compressed image that must surely be being rescaled at best . . . .

That depends on the settings you turned on under the blue Lightning icon on the Preview monitor - if all are off then you are using the resolution of the monitor. MEP may generate a 4K image however after going through the video card it is, IIRC, rescaled to the monitor resolution.

Forgot to mention in a prevoius post - a 'stock lens' is the lens bundled with the camera if not purchased as 'body only'.

. . . . Whether in print or electronically viewed . . . .

Sharpening for print can be more aggressive then for monitor/TV viewing, however even then you have to be aware of the printing medium and the photo subject - inkjet printing has a certain amount of bleed in the paper and can be more aggressively sharpened (within reason) then for laser colour printing

@johnebaker

Hi John.

I don't have any stock lenses. I have never bought a body with a kit lens. I haven't owned a variable aperture zoom lens since 2012.

I don't print my own material that often either but I am asked to prepare my images in jpg format for printing by the various organisations I have shot for. Indoor shots tend to be printed to continuous polystyrene sheet, while outdoor posters and wraps tend to be put onto vinyl.

Even then it may only be a partial portion from several shots made into a composite or added to artwork.

I sometimes have to go to the printers and accept or ask to alter settings from small section proofs before the whole print process proceeds. Those are huge machines but I have no idea of the costs involved.

Referring to my zooming of the preview window when observing the sharpening effect - of course I appreciate that what matters is the overall effect when viewed full screen, but it is useful to observe close up how much it is unnaturally changing the detail and noise when judging how much to apply. Also as you say, it depends on what the audience is viewing it on as to the end effect, and be aware that most TV's apply sharpening when set to defaults, with the default sharpness setting usually at mid position which means 50%. This combined with sharpening in MEP can give horrible white edges. Anyway most of your footage that I have seen looks great, so keep doing what you are doing.

Now that I realise that the DJI footage is not using B frames it might be interesting to try an export using just I and P frames in the GOP Structure box of the Advanced Video settings and see if it may help in some of the areas you have seen some blurring in some of the darker areas - like in the brick walls in the dockyard.

@Scenestealer

Hi Peter.

I have a contact who is a YouTuber who only exports his videos for upload encoded with only I frames and the files are huge. They also look OK but I'm not sure they look that much better when he uses his Osmo Pocket over the upload results I'm getting when I upload mine.

I tend to use the tools within MEP for effect rather than correction. My cameras don't record the equivalent of raw footage but more akin to a jpg where an amount of processing has already been applied in camera. My DSLR would allow me to sharpen and alter other parameters in camera and that may be worth trying out and storing a movie profile. Something I hadn't until now thought about. That may be worth doing to get the two cameras looking similar in output. I may have a play with that over the weekend. Your post has prompted that thought, so thank you.

Ray.

I doubt they would after YT has converted them!

The only small advantage will be that the YT converters have a better quality video (I frames only) to start with.

Very good feed here as I am also experiencing some issues. I have incorporated alot of photos fading in and out from each in like a timelapse format. These come out a bit blurry and had to use alot of sharpening. I have also some video in the same clip shot in 1920x1080x60fps. Video seems ok just really photos are the issue.

I run again with GOP at 60 but is the same.

Hi

The YT video looks fine to me when played back at 1080p 60fps.

Which export preset did you use - the above image only shows the advanced settings which appear to be a little odd - did you change any of the preset parameters?

I dont really understand to much about the settings so as someone else commented. it would be nice just to use one setting. The one you see is one i created and saved, just thought there maybe a way of improving. I mainly shoot 1080x1920 @60fps.

Hi Steve.

It is my experience that if you are using a DJI product and shooting raw for stills that the raw images are very small and actually lack detail. Try shooting jpg or if you already have jpgs direct from the drone use them instead or the raw files. If you are not using raw files then I am at a loss as to the quality issue which I can clearly see there is a quality difference.

Hi

. . . .  I tried altering a few things just to see if i could improve. I dont really understand to much about the settings  . . . .

That could be the issue - use the default video settings for the standard preset they are optimised for the particular resolution, framerate and bitrate combinations.

In your case, try the MP4 FullHD 1920x1080 59.94fps option with no changes to the advanced settings.

. . . . If done 4k pics should i still use these export settings or different?? . . . .

Use the above setting, if the client requires FullHD. If the client requires 4K UHD then the video and images should be shot as 4K UHD and exported as 4K UHD with no changes to the export preset.
