Trying to Edit MKV file

Michael-Hawes schrieb am 23.12.2021 um 15:32 Uhr

Under Windows 10, I have an .mkv file that plays properly in VLC Media Player with video and sound. However, when I try to open it for editing in Movie Edit Pro 2015 (Version 14.0.0.160), I get an error of "Error 0x3002: syntax error in mkv EBML, no seekhead found"

When I view its components in MKVToolNix it shows that the video has a codec of AVC/H.264/MPEG-4p10 and the audio has an unidentified codec.

I am willing to upgrade if that will solve the problem.

Supplementing with full OS information:

Windows 10 Version 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1415)

I also updated MEP to version 14.0.0.187 and received the same error. I would extract the MP4 from the MKV if I could, but no luck finding a way to do that so far.

@Michael-Hawes

Hi

The error message would suggest the MKV file has Chapters allocated however the location data of these may be missing or there is an issue with the audio track(s).

. . . . the video has a codec of AVC/H.264/MPEG-4p10 and the audio has an unidentified codec . . . .

Try using MediaInfo to analyse one of the MKV clips and post the results, see this tutorial if you are not familiar with MediaInfo on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip to get data that you can post directly into a comment.

Greetings @Michael-Hawes

If memory serves me well VLC can re-convert audio and/or video, and as your file plays in VLC ....

@Michael-Hawes Michael, AVIDemux should be able to losslessy convert your MKV into MP4. If you still have trouble, you can set the audio output to AAC.

If you'd like, you can put the file on Google Drive or Dropbox and we can check it with a newer version of MEP.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
