Juju Time
Music by John Duffin and Clay Wilson. Lyrics by John Duffin.
Based on 'Days of My Past' by Clay Wilson.
Intro
It's Juju Time. It's Juju Time!
Verse One - Alone
We were alone, left to ourselves
Protected by amulets and spells
Then you came to save us to help make matters worse
To charm the sickened worms and lift the wicked curse
Chorus
It’s Juju Time - it's time to shine and put on a show
It’s Juju Time - everything's fine, just go with the flow
Verse Two - Naive
We were naive, our only sin:
dazzled by the razzle, taken in
Then you came to save us from clear and present dangers
To practice your magic and sacrifice the saviour
Chorus
It’s Juju Time - check all the signs and let yourself glow
It’s Juju Time - just recite the lines and no one will know
Verse Three – Unsure
We were unsure, we cast the bones
Sitting down amongst the standing stones
Then you came to save us from would-be friends and neighbours
To cast a spell on witches, wicker men, and other strangers
Chorus
It’s Juju Time - it's time to shine and put on a show
It’s Juju Time - everything's fine, just go with the flow
It’s Juju Time - check all the signs and let yourself glow
It's Juju Time.
Some six months after reinventing 'Days of My Past and Other Stories' in a series of weird instrumentals, I returned to write lyrics from ideas I'd assembled over a couple of months accompanied by others which I wrote during a week of frenzied snatches at 5:30 am in the morning and in the car to and from work. The weather was unusually cold with a chilled wind blowing from Antarctica. I was at home in the evening watching episodes of a series called 'Trapped', an Icelandic thriller/drama which compounded my uneasy frame of mind. And so this song came from all that. There is a lot in this one despite its short length. It carries on from the musical variations I'd started back in January with a spooky lyric to match and take it to 'somewhere else' I knew it belonged. What developed is a dark little ditty: a mix of bile, oil, dirt, and blood, celebrating an effect I named 'Juju Time': a ritual soundtrack for emotional leaching. The phenomena it describes is that sense of being used by another to enable the other to get what they want and the denial circuit this initiates. I have fallen for it many times and still often do. Like a moth to a flame, I will always think the best until the truth is revealed when I reserve the right to re-evaluate. Named after a memorable analysis topic, the juju - an icon of African fetishistic mysticism concerning a spirit underworld.
