"Wrong" 4:3 images should have been 16:9 to fil TV screen

FF22 wrote on 10/9/2022, 12:23 PM

Okay, ages ago it was suggested to use the entire camera sensor, that is 4:3 and then selectively edit to 16:9.

BUT now I have all of these 4:3 images which show up, well, as a smaller image on my 16:9 TV. Is there a simple (always looking for simple) way to making those HUNDREDS 4:3 images 16:9. And I don't want to distort them so obviously I need to crop them for a 16:9 resultant images. I don't care about the limited portrait images. I would just like to make those 4:3 into 16:9.

I do realize that cropping might result in some of the images having the focal point be shifted from that might have been center.is now offset.

Or any ideas. I know that I once used Faststone editor to grab 16:9 sections of those 4:3. Not sure if it could be used or automated with only the occasional intervention to grab a different section.

All ideas either in Magix or elsewhere to accomplish this objective.

Thanks.

Hi

. . . . Is there a simple (always looking for simple) way to making those HUNDREDS 4:3 images 16:9. . . . .

Whether you use the images in the same project or various pojects you could use the Section effect

Referencing the image below:

Select the first image and add the Section effect - 1 in image below, in the correct AR required and hopefully centred on the image, for the first image on the timeline.

Right click the first image and In the Video effects option - 2 in image below select Apply video effects to all the following...  ensure the Section effect is selected if there are other effects applied to the first image that you do not want applied to the rest.

Note you could save the Section effect from the first image as a custom effect and load this into future images in other projects - the options are also under the Right click, Video effects option.

THANKS. I've been playing and I think most of my questions below have been answered but will need more time to play. I think I even like how some of the PORTRAIT images have cropped to 16:9 Horizontal. Does not seem to affect mp4 video segments. I will have to play across some images where I zoom. THANKS. Is there a way to apply a saved effect to images or must I right-click and then load the 16-9 effect or is there some quick way to use the 16-9 affect that I saved?

------------------------------------

I will have to chew on that but it seems to get me to where I want or, at least, closer. I will ask, does using this always select the same "location" in each selected image? Or is there a way to adjust up/down to kind of change the focal point (more sky or less sky, more/less foreground). I guess I can apply universally and then tweak the few that might be "off" for my tastes. I guess SAVING effect would be best so that I can move through the images and apply to each and not blow my already zoomed or otherwise altered choices.

Is there a way to select an aspect ration of 16:9 or do I have to eyeball it?

I just fired up Faststone and it is pretty good but requires doing each image. Although, with a macro program I could kind of automate the process somewhat. Then point Magic to the new folder containing the newly cropped image when it can't find the originals and load the new ones in.

This will teach me to NOT going 4:3 originally. I also have to remember that shooting video in Portrait generally is a no-no!

Thanks again. And I recall, you have been here for ages answering such questions.

Whoops... I seem to have lost all of my TITLES or they are off the screen/image. If I click on the Title option in the image, I see the title but it appears near the top of the preview frame over a black background. I don't seem to be able to move it back into the frame.

The title in the top image is still in "edit" mode. Click on the "tick" icon at top right and the title will exit "edit" mode and you'll be able to drag it down into the 16:9 crop box area.

Is there a way to select an aspect ration of 16:9 or do I have to eyeball it?

In the Section effect box, you can choose the desired crop box ratio:

This will teach me to NOT going 4:3 originally. I also have to remember that shooting video in Portrait generally is a no-no!

Yes to that! There are scenarios where you need to shoot portrait, both stills and video, when you just can't get far enough back but yes, generally, while it is cool to stand there one-handed with a nice steady upright phone, it is a menace for watching on a proper, landscape screen. If you are stuck with portrait format though, you can crop just the superfluous stuff off the top and bottom using the Section effect in "Free Proportions". You'll end up with a less-portrait image but will be able to see the subject better as it will be partially zoomed-in.

Is there a way to apply a saved effect to images or must I right-click and then load the 16-9 effect or is there some quick way to use the 16-9 affect that I saved?

Yes, there is a keyboard shortcut for dealing with effects. The shortcuts are shown on the Video Effects menu. For example, "Paste Video Effects" is "Shift" + "-". If you're keen, you can even create your own shortcut using the File>Settings>Keyboard Shortcut box; I have set Paste Video Effects to F4.

Yes, the default position for the crop box is centred left/right and top/bottom. You can later adjust the crop box position on individual images.

Clicking that little "checkmark" brings up the image below. I can't locate "title" to move or resize it. All I see is the Section delimiter rectangle. If I totally erase the title, then I can create a new one. ODD?

I can probably recreate titles but there are a lot of them. And I always tweak then to shorten them and fade them in/out as the image displays. I have UNgrouped the title from the image. That does not help.

If you look at my WHOOPS post above and then zoom that first image where the title shows up on the black screen, there is a sliver of the underlying jpg showing. But there's no way to get to it that I can tell.

Here's the title in timeline mode.

I don't understand what I'm seeing there. When editing a title, there is a small black box around, so you can actually see the title, but then that disappears when you click the tick. I can only assume that the expanse of black is the program background It seems as though you've cropped/moved the image itself right down to the bottom of the screen. Try resetting the Section effect on that image and apply the section effect again.

One thing to note, in your second screenshot, of the timeline, the orange Play marker is not on the purple title. Make sure the Play marker is on the title or image being edited. That is, the image is highlighted in bright yellow with the Play marker on it. Even after all these years with Magix I still forget to do that, thinking I'm adjusting the effects on one image only to find I's messing up another one because I haven't moved the Play marker to the image I'm editing. Remember that the monitor only shows the image that the Play marker is lying over, not the image that is selected in bright yellow.

Hi

. . . . Here's one with the sliver (I think) of the underlying image???? . . . . .

In the image of the black text entry box covering virtually all of the image would suggest that the 'empty' region has multiple lines containing spaces and carriage returns (Enter key) ie as shown below

The net result is the text disappears off the top of the screen.

I still can't figure out what's blocking my Original titles from showing after I reformat 4:3 images to 16:9 images. I've used with a Template or the Section tool. In other case, the title disappears. There are not Carrage Returns or Enters in the title's text entering box. Just one line of text as shown below. No CR before or after the one line title.I can attempt to edit the title-text but I can add/subtract letters but then if I click that tic mark, nothing happens. I don't get the usual dotted frame around the text where I can move/resize it. But, as noted, I can delete the "phantom" title and create a new one. A tedious venture but it seems to be the only solution unless I'm missing some step in the 4:3-16:9 conversion. I've both grouped and ungrouped those titles with no change in results.

Hi

For the titling issue try resetting the progam back to its default settings - File, Settings, Reset program settings to default.

Try working in Timeline mode - you can see more than in Storyboard mode and can locate 'phantom' ie duplicate titles as you can scroll up/down and/or zoom in/out of tracks, and full screen the timeline as shown below, you have more detailed control over the image/video/title/audio objects.

@FF22 When you added the Section & then chose Apply to All... there's two choices, Apply video effects to all the following & Apply video effects to all,

Apply video effects to all the following only adds section to the items in that single track, your pics on track 1,

Apply video effects to all will add section to everything inc your text, & can have unwanted/unexpected results, this also applies if you Ctrl+A to Select all then added the Section.

Try selecting your txt, right click Reset video effects, it'll remove any Section you accidently added & reposition your text back in the centre of the screen, you'll have to reposition them but you shouldn't loose the writing itself,

PS, what size are your 4:3 pics?

I tried this yesterday with some video & some pics, I just did it again with the pics to take some screen captures, these are created by my phone 12000 x 9000,

When I Apply the section to all the text disappears, Section shows nothing, I don't think you can Section text.

right click - Reset on the text brings the it back

I'm not sure that I've solved all of my issues but plodded through in any event.

It was a terrific trip. We had planned to hike to the recently active volcano but it went quiet. Living in a state with five of them with St Helens the most active, yes, nature can be very interesting.

I'd love to visit New Zealand.

@FF22

Great job, FF22.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

WELL!!! All is NOT well. I wanted to add a Travel Map animation. Upon opening my saved project, I find that many of my 19:9 converts are now back to 4:3. I know I saved it. So, for some reason, I'm losing my saves. BAK are not helpful as I guess it saves too often and have captured the smaller images also.

And, frankly, almost anytime I make a change to the project, I try remembering to SAVE. For some reason it is not holding my image settings.

@FF22 Is this the first time you've opened the project since saving it, or has it opened correctly in the past with images saved correctly

PS, I think Magix has screwed up the forum, maybe my pc just needs cleaning n restarting.

BAK are not helpful as I guess it saves too often and have captured the smaller images also.

BAKs only save what they see in the project, so if you say you saved before exiting, with the sections/crops OK, then something doesn't add up.

The BAKs do go back to 10 backups, so I'd try the earliest BAK you have.

Same here, Gid, multiple entries for each person. It was ominous when the forum wasn't available for a few hours yesterday (or the day before?).

I think it's still here.🤪😳🤣.

@FF22

What version system build of Windows are you on?

There was an update about three weeks ago that screwed with some of the settings in MEP. I think it only happened on Windows 10 but not sure. It was rectified with a further update some two weeks later. Windows 10 current version is 19044.2130.

You should keep the any driver versions and windows 10 build info in with your system spec in your signature.

Ray.

19044.2130 is my version.

Completely exasperate I came up with a convoluted process. But the results are still not terrific. I finally used Faststone to manually converted 4:3 to 16:9 in a lossless process. Then I moved those converted and appropriately renamed items where Magix expects them and they loaded. But, another BIG BUT. I seems that the images are "shorter" (top to bottom) rather than being 16:9. I think that Magix is applying the original format to these resized images and making them less than full screen or 16:9. Makes not sense. But if I select image(s) and then RESET their format properties, they all get more full..

You know as a septuagenarian this keeps me on my toes!!!! But the blood pressure and thinning hair are not all that satisfying! 🤑

@FF22 I just tried that, if you have an already saved project & then you mess with the files for that project it will produce those black bars top & bottom next time you open it, just remove Section from those files, You're messing with MS's head & are going to get odd results.

When you say you saved it, are you sure? I tried changing 4:3 images to 16:9 - Saved & the project opened with all changes to sizes.

In Program settings there's a folders option, check it didn't get saved there instead,

I'm sure that I'm messing with someone's head - mine for sure. Others may be involved. I am inclined to poltergeists at the moment. (oh, and there's that old guy, too) 🤑

Here's image. Upper Left. Full (top to bottom) and Less-full

I don't want to globally reset since that would negate from specific affects for images like zooms or pans.

@FF22 Yeah you're getting that because you've changed the orig photos, If you open Section you'll see the dotted selection, MS is still applying what you told it to before you saved it but now it's confused, just remove section & the black bars will g away.

Like i say I did it to see what you were doing,

If you right click on the media Object Properties it'll tell you it's now 16:9,

If you had Pans or Zooms on those photos that'll be messed up too,

Restore your photos to their orig 4:3 size & your project should open correctly, I say this presuming you have the orig pics saved as back-ups,
