Working Offline - and getting "error messages"

Hubert22 wrote on 5/2/2018, 4:56 AM

Since the advent of Windows 10, I do all my video work offline. Up until some weeks ago, there was no problem. But lately when I save a video file and exit MEP 20014, I get an "error message" entitled "Magix Online World" and contains 12 lines, beginning "An error had [sic] occurred during communication" and asking me to check my internet connections, etc. etc. The "error message" ends with Abort-Retry-Ignore options. Clicking on Ignore seems to get me out of this "error" condition. But it is most annoying having to go thru this each time. How do I stop this "error message" from happening? Thanks for any help!

Therein, I suspect, lies the problem! I understand it is a feature of all recent versions of Magix programs that they need to periodically "phone home", perhaps to check that your software is up to date or that the program itself is correctly registered and activated. Without such a periodic check, the most recent versions can stop working, I believe.

However, since you are running MEP 2014 (hence, quite an "old" version now) I'm not at all sure about all the above, though I'm pretty certain that, at the very least, the program will want to check for any appropriate updates.

Perhaps it would be pertinent to ask why you always do all your video work offline?

Hi

There are also 2 other possibilities:

  1. you have a login set for file sharing.

You can check what logins are set by going to File, Online, Manage your login details

The minimum login level set that you must have is for Activation and registration, there are also options for Catooh, Facebook, Magix Online, Showfy, Vimeo and Youtube.

  2. the Hide news option is not checked in the program setting (Y key), System tab

Thank you both for your thoughtful comments. I tried John's suggestions but they did not seem to make a difference. So I then connected to internet and ran MEP2014 - it worked fine of course, just like before these "error" messages began to appear. I disconnected from the internet - and voilà! No longer any "error" indications. And since then MEP2014 has continued to work fine!!! It would appear that an occasional connection to internet makes MEP2014 happy - at least for some time...

For MEP2017, the situation was a little different. Upon opening it on an offline PC, there were a couple of warning screens saying it cannot connect. But I got used to hitting OK a couple of times - and it went back to working normally - and on exiting there were never any of those "error" messages. And now the MEP2017 warning screens no longer appear (for the moment!) - probably also due to the fact that I went onto internet for a while. (BTW I had given up on MEP2017 almost as soon as I purchased it - it was much slower than MEP2014, plus there were some details that for me were a regression. It looks much better now. I had applied the patches that came out but did not test it. Might be time to move off MEP2014 if I can find a good reason!)

As for working offline - I do that not only for video, but for everything else where it is possible (which for me is most things). I really dislike having my PCs hijacked by Microsoft whenever they try to straighten out Windows 10 or whatever. I have one PC connected to the Web for email, browsing, etc. and Microsoft can do what they think they have to on that one. It must be said that so far I haven't seen the arrival of a single new function worthy of interest. And PCs not connected to the Web run little risk of infection...

Again many thanks for taking an interest in my post.
