Window Arrangement keeps changing

RichD wrote on 2/13/2023, 5:31 PM

Hi. I am running MAGIX Movie Edit Pro Plus, Version 19.0.2.58 (UDP3)

I found other solutions for my issue but none of them worked. When I launch the application, it tries to set the window arrangement properly, but then it resets them. I have tried the following:

Window arrangement -> Standard

File -> Settings ->. Reset

Updated my video driver

Uninstalled the product, reinstalled the product.

I am pulling my hair out. Even if I manually set them, the tool resets them when I create a new movie tab or exit and relaunch the program. I have been using the product for years under Windows 10 and never experienced this.

Thanks,

Rich

Hi.

If you are using a 4K monitor, try the following,

Right-click on the program icon.

Select "Properties" from the context menu.

Click on "Compatibility" tab.

Click on "Change high DPI settings".

Check the box "Overwrite behaviour at high DPI scaling" and select your program under "Scaling is performed by"-->"System".

@RichD Hi, sorry for the stupid question but did you Save the window arrangement ?

RichD wrote on 2/13/2023, 9:30 PM

Yes, I did try that but thanks for covering that option. I am sure in the end, this is something simple that I have overlooked. I also tried the DPI settings shown above, but that is not working either. I am double checking as per the message.

Hi

. . . . did you Save the window arrangement . . . .

This does not save the arrangement of the program window as a default setting - it assigns the arrangement to a function key starting with F10 and allows you to save several arrangements for quick switching between layouts.

Pressing F9 should reset the pane arrangement.

F9 resulted in a Rename window. Maybe something with Windows and not the tool. I appreciate all of the suggestions but none have worked. What is really interesting is that when I choose my save settings, use Window Arrangement, or even hit F10, it temporarily resets all the windows correctly (maybe 1/2 second), then reverts back.

The only thing that has recently changed is my monitor I have a 32" ASUS curved monitor. I double checked and the driver is installed for that monitor.

Former user wrote on 2/14/2023, 7:53 AM

@RichD So let me clarify this, you arrange the windows (timeline, preview window, effects window) how you want them but the program resets the layout back to the default (Standard) each time you open the program or create a new movie?

RichD wrote on 2/14/2023, 8:02 AM

That is correct. Very strange indeed. I took it one step further. After arranging the way I like, I saved it as "Rich". Then, I exited and restarted the app. I am including some screenshots. The first one is upon startup. The 2nd is the saved state called "Rich". When I go to window management -> "Rich", it does not work but I see it for about a 1/2 second before it reverts back to the first screen.

Hi

. . . .  32" ASUS curved monitor. . . . .

Is Windows seeing this as 1 monitor or as dual monitors?

  • If as dual monitor how is windows defining them - mine, which are 2 independent monitors are in Windows 11,

If you are running Windows 10 the settings should be similar.

  • Also check the Asus monitor (control panel?) and internal settings.

  • If seen as a single monitor, close Movie Studio and browse the the folder:

    C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\MAGIX\Videodeluxe29_premium

and delete the Videodeluxe.ini file, then restart Movie Studio.

If the display returns to and stays in the normal layout, then it is possible that you Antivirus Protected Folder/Ransomware/Control folder access feature is blocking the program saving the layout, you may need to add an exception for the program to this feature.

Hi.

Your left hand image looks as if you have sections of the program laying under other windowed sections of the programs. If the suggestion @johnebaker has given doesn't work You may have to shrink, move, and then fit those sections around inside the program work area manually before opening a project and just save that session. You can delete it later after you have successfully loaded a project (assuming this works.)

Made sure I had the latest monitor driver - check

Tried the antivirus exception - check

tried rearranging windows in a smaller area instead of full screen - check

I also changed the frequency from 120hz to 60hz on the monitor out of desperation but also no joy

Seems like I have a nack for the unusual :) In my very early career, my boss loved me as a tester because I always found stuff LOL

Hi,

Did you try reinitializing the ini file?

Under:

C:\Users\your_user_name\AppData\Roaming\MAGIX\Videodeluxe27_plus

or 26 or 28 or whatever, I don't know which is which, with MEP closed, rename the file

Videodeluxe.ini to Videodeluxe.old or something like that.

Restart MEP and the ini file will be created. This is like a reset.

yes, I tried that. Don't know what else to do. Thanks again to all that have tried to help. I do a lot of image processing with other tools such as PixInsight for Astronomy. None of those applications have had an issue. Perhaps I need to look for another movie editing tool or my perhaps my monitor is incompatible with Magix

Thanks,

@RichD Hi,

The second picture is Standard (default) setting? where is the Preview window (Project Monitor) in the 1st image?

'The only thing that has recently changed is my monitor I have a 32" ASUS curved monitor. I double checked and the driver is installed for that monitor.' .

Have you tried plugging in a different monitor to see if it still messes with the layout?

I don't think I've ever owned a monitor that needed a driver?

@RichD

Hi.

Although I think as far as you have stated your monitor screen size and refresh rate as well as Windows version I don't think any of us know the rest of your system spec. If you could let us know any graphics card information, CPU generation model number, amount of ram etc, it may help us work out a bit more.

I can't see where a monitors refresh rate would make a difference but the resolution may do in combination with a given graphics card. Also what are your program settings within Movie Studio in File / Settings / Program / Device options in the Import, Processing, and Export Drop down boxes? What options are showing? Have you tried changing any of them? I would normally add an image at this point but at present the site won't allow me to.

Thank you again for persistence :) I have some screenshots for my system which I believe covers was is being asked for. I only installed the driver as per ASUS recommendation to leverage the capabilities. I am not a gaming person but do a lot of image processing for my Astrophotography work. When I first got the monitor, windows chose what I believe to be "generic" something so yes, a monitor driver is not required. I can try swapping back later. BTW, I let Windows 10 do it's thing with automatic updates so that is current. I also made sure I had the latest graphics card driver.

Hi

According to your images above this is a Thinkpad P51 laptop with the Asus monitor attached and brings us back to the first question in my previous comment.

The cause of your issues may be the mismatched screen resolutions and incorrect Windows display settings.

Disconnect the ASUS monitor from the laptop, then try resetting the program interface.

If the program interface remains as the default layout, then:

  • close the program before plugging in the ASUS monitor

  • in Windows settings, System, Display:

    - ensure that the laptop screen is set as the primary screen - this will be the one you see the laptop boot up

    - the displays are set to duplicate - I would not advise extending the displays due to the resolution and size mismatch

    - Scale is set to 100%

The start the program again, the program interface should remain at its default layout.

I decided to walk away from this for a few days. Today, I was planning to review all comments once again making sure that I have tried all of them. When I launched the app, I saw a message about the previous session crashing. I sent the dump to Magix and it the app continue. It properly aligned all the windows! I immediately saved the window arrangement and made a movie. I exited and restarted and all worked fine.

During my career, I had to periodically troubleshoot SW issues and I was always manically focused on making sure that the state was consistent and applying good troubleshooting techniques. This one makes absolutely no sense to me. Logically, only thing that I can figure is that Windows did an update in the background that effected this application.

Thank you everyone for providing input. I was able to learn some new things during the process so no wasted time.
