Widescreen video not recording as widescreen.

mark.s.witty wrote on 8/14/2022, 9:38 AM

The video I want to record is 16:9, but when capturing the video, it seems to be captured as 4:3, thereby squashing the image. This is a recent purchase from Magix and has Video Easy 7, my old version was not compatible with Windows 10. If I export the project to 16:9 DVD, it stays as 4:3. I'm sure it recorded as widescreen on the old version. Any ideas how this can be done?

I don't have a copy of VE, but with Movie Edit Pro (VE big brother) in Storyboard mode, you can click on the clip to highlight it, then right-click it and choose Properties. Then click on Video (in the left column) and then set the aspect ratio to 16:9. You should be OK then.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi

What device did you capture the video from, and which import option did you choose?

DVD widescreen video is recorded as 16:9 widescreen, it is recorded in an Anamorphic format which is closer to 5:4 when recorded with a 'switch' added to the file to tell the player to stretch the image in the horizontal direction to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio.

Did you set the Aspect ratio of the project in the Project settings to 16:9 before capturing?

If not try changing it with the project loaded it may fix the video - I no longer have VE installed so cannot check.

. . . . click on the clip to highlight it, then right-click it and choose Properties. Then click on Video (in the left column) and then set the aspect ratio to 16:9. . . .

IIRC VE does not have this capability - the properties are limited to basic file information and the Interlace/de-interlace settings - I do stand to be corrected.

Mark, on the "DVD Burning" screen, in the encoder settings try "Standard DVD Widescreen". It's described on page 51 of the Video Easy 7 manual.

Hi Alwyn

Yes the manual does have some important operations buried further in.

There are 2 ways of looking at - have a 'quick start' section followed by the detail, or put more detail then eventually get to actually importing - neither are perfect.

If you want a good read have a look at the Vegas Pro manual. 🙁

@AAProds @johnebaker Apologies, I had to drop off earlier. Thanks both for your responses and suggestions. I'm recording from a You View set top box SCART, I had the project settings set to HD 16:9 1920x1080. I found the object settings from the program menu and managed to save the project in 16:9 ratio, although the resolution can't be set past 720x576, presumably due to the source material? I'll export the video and see what happens. Sorry if I sound a bit vague, that's because I don't really know what I'm talking about!

emmrecs wrote on 8/15/2022, 9:31 AM

720 x 576 is the "standard" for Standard Definition PAL video. It is also the standard for DVDs; it is a common misapprehension that DVD video can be at a higher resolution.

RYVT was primarily designed to allow the "digitising" of analogue video. I can't remember the effective resolution of VHS recordings but I know it is even lower than 720 x 576!

Because the signal is analog there is no specific horizontal resolution, however the generally accepted resolution is 240 x 576 (PAL) and 240 x 480 (NTSC).

We've speared off on a tangent thinking about HD. DVDs can be widescreen. The resolution, in this case, is still 720x576, but the files are flagged 16:9 (pixels are wider than tall😉). If your source video (a VHS?) is only 720x576, your capture stick won't give you any more.

I therefore suggest just do as I suggested earlier: use the "DVD Widescreen" option on the DVD Burning screen. That will, hopefully, set the video flag to 16:9 and you'll get a widescreen DVD.

Hi Al,

I don't agree, sorry!

The OP's comment was about the aspect ratio of his digitised video; he clearly seems to expect that his widescreen output will be more than 720 x 576. As we agree, this is not possible for any DVD output. Unfortunately, there is still a common misunderstanding that DVD-Video is High(er) Definition.

@mark.s.witty commented - 'You View set top box SCART'

The only 'You View set top box' I can find are the Humax DTR-series, they are Digital TV Recorders which have a resolution up to 1080p and the SCART can handle up to this resolution.

If this is the device 'You View set top box', then, like my Satellite receiver, it should (not guaranteed) be possible to get the video file directly out of the recorder off the hard drive by copying to an external hard drive or USB memory stick, possibly also over ethernet if it is networkable, it will be slow as the video is encrypted and must be decrypted.

Looking at the tute for RYVT, that SCART only has Composite out. You are not going to get HD. John, I note that that "Advanced" dialogue box has "Magix video export" as it's name. I hardly think that VE is going to convert SD Interlaced to 1920x1080 Progressive on the fly when recording. And there is no way a cheap capture stick like that is going to hardware convert SD to HD on the fly either.

So yes, we are being sidetracked. 😉

The irony of using a composite video cable from a JVC SVHS machine is not lost on me. 😎

it should (not guaranteed) be possible to get the video file directly out of the recorder off the hard drive by copying to an external hard drive or USB memory stick, possibly also over ethernet if it is networkable, it will be slow as the video is encrypted and must be decrypted.

Good luck with that!
