Why is the water chroma key filter gone

jake-h wrote on 8/29/2024, 1:06 AM

I am currently editing a video that has gone through different versions of this software. I upgraded to the 2025 edition of this and I am highly upset that I am now noticing that the "water" chroma key option is entirely gone. It's only 4 options now. Why?? I cannot fix the error I am having because the option is no longer there.

Hi

. . . . Why is the water chroma key filter gone . . . .

Good question, I would suggest you ask Magix by raising a support ticket - link is at the top of this page selecting Movie Studio, scroll down to Contact Support, and work through the dialogues.

In Movie Studio 2025 it is possible to 'emulate' the effect, however there are some 'differences' in colour/brightness, which, with further work, may approach that of the quick demo of the Water effect simulation shown below, possibly the Mask Generator may also be of use:

Hi,

I presume that MMS2025 has the same new feature as Video Pro X16. Under Chromakey, click on Hide Color Range. Below under Hide Color Range, click on the first button and use the pipette to select the water in your image. Adjust the sliders as appropriate.

Hi John

. . . . Below under Hide Color Range, click on the first button and use the pipette to select the water in your image . . . .

In older versions of MEP/VPX this was the 'Color' option, the Water effect is very different ie:

After further experimenting, this is a closer simulated version in VPX 16:

The timeline:

Do note, the methods used depend very much on the source image/video content.

Sorry for not replying, I will try this out and I will give feedback. The thing is, it seems this won't function the same because when the original water filter was used it had a unique specialty where it would reflect the surrounding image in the water animation.

Hi

. . . . when the original water filter was used it had a unique specialty where it would reflect the surrounding image in the water animation . . . .

I suspect this is a third party pligin, the Chromakey Water effect does not do this, and on the object the effect is applied to it is called 'Relief' which is similar to the Emboss effect.

Some versions of MEP/MMS came with NewBlue Elelemnts which has a Reflection effect which does what you are describing.

Hi Jake,

I also looked into the "Water" Chroma Key option. Unfortunately, you did not upload an image so that we as forum members can see what you mean. Is this what you have in mind?

Video made with Video Deluxe 2016

I have searched for an alternative for this, but have not found it (yet). Perhaps other forum members know this.

Kind regards,
Rob

Hi Rob

From what @jake-h describes ie:-

. . . the original water filter was used it had a unique specialty where it would reflect the surrounding image in the water animation . . .

is not the Chromakey, Water effect, as first mentioned, from earleir versions of MEP/MMS.

@johnebaker

Hi John,

What you describe is absolutely correct. I only used this effect once and then not again. But you can do it this way. This method was already described by @browj2 (John CB) on August 29, 2024 at 3:46 PM

Best wishes
Rob
