Why does video freeze & audio mute on and off when I play two tracks at once?

bobmdly wrote on 12/11/2012, 3:29 PM

I have MEP 16 plus & it worked fine for two years. Now I loaded a file to edit and when I place a second video track below the first, the everything freezes and the audio plays on and off every second. This only happens when the playback marker reaches the start of the second track. The only way to stop it is to press escape key. I tried playing each track seperately and they play fine. I also deleted and reloaded the two tapes with no success. Usually, I download in Mpeg but this time I tried AVI. Could this be the problem? I once tried AVI about a year ago and it worked fine. I like to use AVI because the final render to Mpeg 2 looks better. Surely MEP should be able to handle AVI ?? Please help if  you have a solution.

Sorry no-one has posted any answer for you but I suspect that is because it is unclear what exactly you are trying to do!

If you "place a second video track below the first", what are you expecting to see?  In effect, what you are asking MEP to do is to "combine" the two videos since it "reads" upwards through all the tracks (whatever is on the lowest track, i.e. the highest-numbered track, will be placed "in front of" everything else.)  So, I'm not surprised it freezes and stutters!  To combine two videos in this way, especially if they're uncompressed avi files, is one heck of a demand on the computer!

So, to fully help you, can you answer these questions: what, exactly, are you trying to do? What is the precise file format of those avi files?  (avi is a "container", with many variants!  MEP can handle avi files, generally, without any problem)  GSpot or MediaInfo (both free) will help you to find this info if you don't already have it.  What are the specs of your computer (OS, CPU, RAM etc.)?

Hi Bob.

Thanks for the update and the explanation of exactly what you are trying to do.  "Multicam" makes it all clear!

However, the fundamental problem of the non-playing avi is quite concerning.  I've never yet come across an avi that MEP/VPX couldn't easily handle.  I don't think different bit-rates ought to cause the freezing etc, though given that different audio sampling rates can cause severe hiccups, perhaps it's not impossible.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you've managed to resolve the problem in a manner which works for you.
