Why does my MMM Project file say "cannot open"?

megazoneex wrote on 1/14/2015, 1:54 PM

It seem like the more work  and time and the larger the project, the higher the chances are of the file some how deciding to not open or get corrupted.

Im getting tired of this happen and losing hope in this product.

All that happens is im working in a project and then it decides to crash. Im not using using anything foreign like VSTs or 3rd party plugin. i am just using the basic sounds that were made and came with the software and a SAMSOM MIDI Keyboard that i use only for references.

All it does when corrupted is ask to send a report with no reply back. it never tells me how or why it wont open. It also seems people get very little help here  based on the (some what similar) questions i have seen on here.

P,S.

Back up does nothing for me because it only backs up files that were closed accidently (e.g. program closed accidently),  sound freezes ( you get noise from your speaker) or you get a "The program has stopped working" window error. It does not back up a corrupted file at the point of being corrupted.

Email me at MegaZoneX@gmail.com if you can help solve this.

Wow!  Now here's an intelligent lady who knows how to provide some computer specs!  She just put all you pitiful guys to shame!

One reason questions like these don't get answered much is that none of us work for MAGIX, and none of us are the programers who created these products.  And, you guessed it, the programers do not answer questions!

This is a long shot, but have you gone to the HELP menu and checked for any updates.

Hi

How soon after starting a project does MMM crash?

. . . . It does not back up a corrupted file at the point of being corrupted. . . . .

The auto backup is time based - check you have the Auto save / backup option in the programs settings checked and that the value is between 5 and 10 minutes (10 =default)

In the folder where the project is saved are there any files with BAK and a file extension .MM_ in their name eg some-name-here_BAK0.MM_ ?

If so you can load the latest one for the project - File, Backup, Load backup project - this will restore the project to the last backup point - then save as a regular project immediately.

The cause of the crashing may not be MMM at fault.  Other causes can be:-

  1. Other running software- eg anything you see in the Notification area on the Windows Toolbar

  2. A driver issue

  3. A memory problem

  4. A hard disc problem

  5. A hardware failure / blockage eg Fan causing overheating

Item 5 - check inside your computer that all the fans are running and that the heatsinks are clear of fluf and dust

Items 3 and 4 can be eliminated easily by running memory testing software eg MemTest86 and the HD drive manufacturers own testing software - which should be available on their website support pages..

Item 2  - most likley candidates for this is the Audio driver or the Graphics driver

Item 1 is the hardest to determine because it means turning off / stopping all non essential tasks which are running eg those you see in the Notification area and running MMM until it either crashes or remains stablewith a complex project.

HTH

John

Hi,

I understand that you are still having problems. For a start, update to the latest patch for MMM. You are several patches behind. The latest is 20.0.5.56.

As John Baker indicated, make sure that you have the automatic backup turned on. There will be a backup made every 10 minutes, and there is a cycle of 10 backups. These are made automatically, not when there is a problem, as you indicate in your ps.

As John Baker indicated, problems often occur with most programs, sometimes often, sometimes rarely and then all of a sudden a whole string of crashes, and there is a multitude of possibilities, usually conflicts somewhere. Last night, computer gremlins took over my computer causing my movie editor to crash several times on a very small project, and then Internet Explorer went wonky going into a loop of resets. I rebooted, same IE problem. This morning, no IE problems. Go figure.

Let me know how you make out with the update.
