why does FABS.exe need to run

Magix FABS.exe - I do not want fabs.exe to load itself into the Start up services unless I am using a Magix Edit Pro in Windows XP and do not see the need to allow this application to grab hold of memory when it is not needed.

Any attempt to disable this in the Computer Management Console it returns a Error 5 message which prevents the user from disabling this.

I really would like to know what this service is and what it does - after all I should be given the option to decide whether or not I need the Service - I suspect it is part of the Firebird SQL programme which is quietly installed with EDIT Pro or other Magix products.

I would also like to know why is it necessary to run- as  programs can function without it?

Is the only way to remove this by uninstalling Fieberd SQL?

If so what are the consqeuences?

You patently  have missed the big picture.

I am using the latest version of Edit Pro Plus in Windows XP and quite clearly stated that I have been into the Management Console to disable it - but it returns an Error 5 message - forwhatever reason it seems to me Magix have built in some constraint to disallow this action.

All I wish to know is uninstalling Firebird the only way to get rid of FABS.exe from loading at start up - this is not a Microsoft issue it is quite clearly of Magix's making - I've even unchecked it using msconfig but still the damn thing loads itself.

My other comments were slanted towards some constructive comments on why Magix Firebird SQL is required its not mentioned anywhere and it would be useful to know under what circumstances this program is required.

I suggest you refrain from making the kinds of comment "Clearly, you do not now how to do this" which I find quite offensive. If, as I've already stated, you'd read and understood my remarks your rather rude reply would not have been made.

If you have anything to say please make it positive and constructive - this kind of rhetoric is uncalled for.

Mike,

Point taken.  I apologize for sounding rude.

And with very good reason - the software is a none destructive editor and uses the Firebird database to store all the information relating to the objects, fades, effects etc on the timeline.

When you load and save a project all this data is imported/exported to/from the database into the project file.

Disable/uninstall this and you render the editing software useless.

I don't get this. I am already seriously contemplating throwing this product into the garbage, taking a $50 loss, but in any case this isn't making sense.

If I spend 99% of my time doing OTHER things than video and do not have this stupid MAGIX program loaded or running, why in the world do I need to have a firebird database or this FABS process running?

I am quite in agreement with the concept of "THIS IS MY COMPUTER AND I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DECIDE WHAT RUNS AND WHAT DOES NOT!" and the obnoxious hijacking of my processor and memory by an unwanted process is rude and annoying.

SO - if MAGIX needs a firebird or a FABS while it is running, why does it have to run when MAGIX is NOT RUNNING?

This is absolutely ASININE.
