When I record my vocals, the instrumental is also being re-recorded.

Lina_Biggs wrote on 2/20/2019, 11:51 AM

I am using Magix Music Maker Premium Edition 2016. I have had such a hard time trying to figure out how to use this program properly, as it is very complicated for me. I recently figured out how to record vocals as well as be able to hear the instrumental being played in my headphones when I am recording, but now my problem is that it is re-recording the instrumental as well as recording my vocals and it is making the project sound very bad. Can anyone please help me with this matter? I'm just ready to start recording my music and putting it out into the world. All the complications has made this very hard for me. I am also using a PYLE 4-Channel BT studio mixer + Audio Mixing Console and an MXL 770 microphone. The headphones are Bluedio Powerful Sound High Fidelity Sound Oval Over-Ear Design. If that's of any help to anyone. PLEASE HELP! :(

Hi, welcome to the Magix forums.

First, please read this post and give us ALL the information requested there.

Second, although MM Premium 2016 is now rather an "old" version, the problem lies with the mixer you have, unfortunately! I assumeΒ you are feeding your mic and the playback of the instrumental track through this mixer to your headphones. Is that correct? If so, that is the problem, I think.

Essentially, looking at the mixer (information was rather scarce but I did manage to find it listed on Amazon and its user manual is here;) both these sources show that anythingΒ plugged into ANY input channel will automatically be routed to the outputs, there is no way to avoid this! IOW, when you feed the instrumental track to one, or two input channels there is no way you can prevent the signal going back from the outputs to your computer.Β  Reading the limited info about this unit, it seems it is designed for use in situations (like a DJ) where it is required that everything plugged into an input should be able to be fed to the outputs.

Hi

. . . . . The description says 2018 which is what I thought I bought when I purchased it but the box says 2016 . . . .

What is the full name and version number of the program as found under Help, About?

How are you connecting the mixer deck to the computer and are you using the headphones on Bluetooth or cable and connected to the computer or the mixer?

any suggestions on what I can do or what I need to be able to work around this? if I need to purchase something in order to make my recording experience better, just name it! I really need to get the ball rolling with this and I have wasted so much time trying to work these matters out with what I have. Clearly, I'm an amatuer at this.. but I really want to get this thing going. I got a home studio, because I'm definitely not made of money to pay for hours upon hours of studio time. Which paying for studio time isn't the problem, but my thing is that I wanted to be able to be in a comfortable environment where I can record my music and be able to take my time with it and not feel rushed to record within an hour or two. Once you have songs that take more time than that, studio time can get really expensive and as a single mother, I can't do that, because I also have other responsibilities. My thought process with this is I can record my own music and then just pay someone to mix and master, unless I can do that myself and then I can just do that as well! Thanks for your help!

I looked up the Pyle mixer and unfortuantely that is your problem. The Pyle is a DJ/Live mixer not capable of doing a stereo headphone 'playback' mix independent of the input of your mic back into the computer. Ideally you'll need a different mixer typically one with a USB connection to the computer. The proper mixers generally have a control near the Headphone Volume Control that says "INPUT/MIC" on one side and "DAW" or "PLAYBACK" on the other side. Setting this control fully to "INPUT/MIC" and you'll hear only your microphone in the headphones. Turning it all the way to the "DAW" position and you'll only hear the Instruments and music track. Setting it somewhere in the middle and you hear both. What I use with Magix is the Behringer UMC404HD. It's more than you need but extremely quiet and has everything needed. The Headphone Out has a MONO/STEREO and a Mix ("IN" / "PB") (microphone / playback). I believe they have a 2 channel model as well.

@johnebakerΒ Β This is my setup. Sorry about the late response. I work in the evenings and come home late. So, I'm only able to check this and respond during these hours of the day. The full name of the program I purchased is Magix Music Maker Premium Edition. I don't know the version number.. I don't know how or where to find that.. but this is the exact one I have. I connect the headphones to the mixer. I used to connect them to the laptop, because at first I couldn't hear the music through my headphones when I would try to record, but somehow that resolved itself.. I don't know what fixed it but now I can hear the music in the headphones when I record, but it records the instrumental all over again over my vocals. my vocals sound very distant when you play back the recording.

Lina_Biggs wrote on 2/22/2019, 12:08 PM

@robert-cacciatoreΒ mine has a USB connection that connects to the computer.. this is my setup, but thank you, I appreciate your help and I will look into the mixer you mentioned. πŸ™‚

It is below where you found the full name of the program in Help, About - it will be in the format of a series of numbers such as 27.0.2.28

Yes these are A+ for the price i used the one XLR input in a post production and radio thing

2 band eq you need 3 band and a compressor, no DAW Vst will do it, why we must have compression before single gets to PC think on this.

Get the cheap one try but the other I see should work - the one you have now

Also many things i used for years will not work on anything but up to XP no Win 7 and beyond a big issue getting a XP op sys for one of my laptops.

Definitely not the XENYX502 - it has no USB interface.

I use an M-Audio M-Track which does everything needed, mixes input sound with that from the computer and comes with a good ASIO driver.

No the mixer needs to have a feature that allows you to listen to the recorded tracks and your vocal mic without sending the β€˜music back’ to record on the new vocal track. Look for the mix control DAW(PLAYBACK) vs. INPUT(MIC).

You dont need EQ or Compression on the mixer. In fact these features will cause more problems than they solve.

This’ll work

I have that one too. It will work but since it doesn't have the "Mix Mic / Playback" control you'll end up doing the one earcup off routine when recording vocals. No problem many singers prefer that. The UM2 is a good little interface - the button 'direct monitor' allows you to 'hear in your headphones what the microphone 'hears' which can be useful to reveal if your mic is picking up outside noise... like trucks driving by, noisey kids, neighbors or the whiney cat who doesn't like your music.😎

I suggest that you pay a bit more and get one that will do the job. You may be disappointed. Like Robert, I like to hear what is playing back and what I am saying/singing, through my headphones. To add to Robert's list...and the dog barking.

Does the Presonus come with an ASIO driver made for it? One comes with the M-Track that seems to work better than ASIO4All.
