What should I purchase to do simple video editing?

CCMoor wrote on 6/11/2021, 3:22 PM

l am new to the world of video podcasting, but being self-employed, need to start to produce and send out a series of 5-7 minute videos that help sell my services. lt will be general commentary on various topical issues for my business, but l will need occasionally to place a Powerpoint slide or chart, showing data or graphics, in the middle of these short videos, and 'talk' to the data or graph in that slide. So, say l make a 6 minute video and want to talk to a chart of data at 2 minutes 40 seconds. l need software to pop in that slide at the right time for 30 or 45 seconds, and then fade back to me. Also, ideally, l could take a, say, 45 second clip of a video picked up on a cable news channel ....say, some discussion of a business or finance topic or news item on CNBC or CNN, and then "splice" this 40 second clip into my own video as I refer to it and then analyze it. l do not need all the fancy stuff I see out there .....where do l get advice on what to buy for my pretty limited needs? Thanks. CCMoor

Hi and welcome to the user to use forums.

A good place to start would be to list your computer specs to see how powerful your system is to cope with video editing and also tell us what resolution you intend to produce the videos for viewing and the platform host you intend to upload them to. There may be several different solutions to your requirements.

But you also have to be very careful about what you put into your videos.

Ideally it should be all your own material or material that is copyright free or you may find your videos in breach of copyright and have them taken down or your video channel removed from the hosting website. News channels can be very fussy about other sites using their material without permission. This is also true for any still shots or background music. Although some hosts like YouTube do a quick copyright scan of your material before it will release it for viewing it is no guarantee that a copyright infringement notice may not be issued at a later date. Not all copyright claims end with a take-down notice but may come with restrictions or you may be asked to remove the offending parts within the video.

A lot of supplied music and some video clips within video editors may also not royalty free and you may need to pay for a commercial license to use the track if not for personal use. IE, not for uploading to the net.

It is always wise to look up any user license agreements thoroughly of a video editor or any material used for the video before publishing as well as the host site's terms and conditions as nearly everything you see on the net is already someone else's property.

Hi

In addition to @CubeAce comment:

If you are wanting to include video clips of work you have done with you talking to camera etc I would advise you to use a 'proper' video camera to avoid issues with the video/audio synchronisation.

If you have to use a Smartphone or other mobile device then you will have to convert the video to a standard that most video editing programs can use.

PowerPoint presentations are not compatible with video editors - you will have to export the PowerPoint presentation as video to use in a video editor.
