What is Movie Edit Pro 2021?

Canaan wrote on 12/19/2023, 5:27 AM

Magix sent me an offer to buy Movie Edit Pro 2021, but I can't find any info on their website. Is it a "legacy" product? I've seen video tutorials and comments going back 3 years.

So what is the latest version of Movie Edit (Studio?) and how does it differ from Movie Edit Pro 2021? I also see a myriad of other products (Movie Studio, Video Pro = Vegas Pro/same price?, Vegas Pro Post, etc.), that look essentially the same. How do these differ?

Is it worth buying the old version or wait to get the latest 2023 (or 2024) version?

@Canaan

Hi

Movie Edit Pro has been rebranded to Magix Movie Studio following the dropping of Vegas Movie Studio development by Vegas Creative Software.

The current version is Magix Movie Studio 2024.

. . . . Is it worth buying the old version or wait to get the latest 2023 (or 2024) version? . . . .

If you are/were a user of Vegas Movie Studio you will find the 2 programs are very different in both appearance, workflow and features/effects avaialble. To keep the same layout and workflow you would need to move to Vegas Pro Edit

If you have an older version of Movie Edit Pro, then you would qualify for the Upgrade price for Magix Movie Studio (MMS) 2024, personally I would not consider buying the older 2021 version, it is now out of support.

However you do need to take into account the system requirements for MMS 2024, and the video resolution and encoding formats you are working with or likely to work with.

The system requirements here are the minimum for the program.

Working with 2.7K or higher resolution video, would benefit from a more powerful system for a better editing experience eg smoother Preview playback and export speeds.

See my Signature for the specs of my systems for working with 4K UHD (3840 * 2160) video.

@Canaan

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

Are you sure it was Magix who sent you that offer? MEP 2021 is now an old version, the latest is Movie Studio 2024 so I am very surprised if MEP 2021 is even still available for sale.

Video Pro X (currently 15) is the latest version of that software; Vegas Pro and its various "editions" are part of the Magix Vegas range of products. The forum for those is here.

Should you decide to buy Movie Studio 2024 do ensure first that your computer at least meets the minimum specifications listed here. Preferably it should exceed them by some margin if your editing experience is to be anything like smooth!

Thanks. We have Vegas Pro already.

But (as a homeschool charity), I was thinking a cheaper, more basic version could be made available for the younger kids. We have an Asus gaming PC, so the specs are good enough for HD definition, no need for anything higher than this.

Magix offered us a Movie Edit 2021 license for $15. The link goes to a hidden part of their website, it seems.

I did a search and found that Movie Studio 2024 is $60. But on the Magix website, I only see Movie Studio Platinum for $70 and Suite for $80. Ultimate is the same price as Vegas Pro Edit ($200).

But it's a 3-year-old, unsupported product. Even $15 may simply be a waste of money if some of the parents subsequently purchase Movie Studio for use at home and our respective versions are incompatible, or substantially different in use and functionality.

So I still don't know what it is in comparison to the newer version (and how the newer versions differ from each and from Vegas)...

@Canaan

Hi.

Basically any old Vegas project will not open fully in a newer Magix version. All you will get is the video clips loaded in the order they were placed in the Vegas version. Any effects or types of cross fades will not be applied even in the latest (2024) version. I'm fairly sure the 2021 version you are being offered by Magix will not even open any Vegas project at all as my 2022 version can't.

It certainly will be a waste of money. MEP 2021 (and alter versions of the Magix program, "Magix Movie Studio" is a completely different animal to the Vegas program you have at school and they are not compatible in any practical way.

If you want compatibility at home, you'll need to stick with a Vegas-branded program such as an old copy of Vegas Movie Studio v16 or earlier, or go the Vegas Pro Edit route.

We decided to stretch for the latest MMS Suite (the extra $5/$10 for what seems to be $500 of proDad effects is a bargain). The kids will probably have a lot of fun with it.

And we have Vegas Pro for our in-house training and promotional videos.

It's hard to believe Magix would sell a three year old product even at a discount, the fact that you cannot find it, be careful it's not a scam email?

I would contact infoservice@magix.net to make sure the source is from them.

Hi

In addition to @AAProds comment, the V icon is for the European name of Movie Edit Pro/Movie Studio = VideoDeluxe, you will see this in the German forum usually referred to as VDL.

The program is named for the appropriate region, however the executable is videodeluxe.exe
