VOB FILES WILL NOT LOAD

RayGuselli wrote on 10/16/2012, 1:22 AM

Hi

I have a dvd of a vhs tape which I want to edit in Magix MEP17.

The dvd contains VOB files. When I try to drag the VOB file into the timeline (the correct VOB file) it states it cannot play this file etc.

I converted to AVI and also to an MPEG...still it will not play on timeline.

Is there something about a converted VHS tape which stops it oplaying in Magix please. By the way, it will not play in other  editing programs but plays on PC with media programs

Any help please would be much appreciated?

Thanks

Ray

Hi Ray,

1. Does the VOB play OK in other apps such as WMP, VLC, PowerDVD, etc?

2. Are you importing it from your HD or some external source? If you have an alternate drive does importing from there give same result?

3. Do other VOB files, treated in the same way, play OK in MEP? Whether from VHS or not? IOW, is the problem confined to just this one file?

4. What does MediaInfo or GSpot report about the file, and are there any differences that strike you compared to other working VOBs?

Hi Terry....some developments....

INTERESTING...

I have three VOB files.....one which appears to be the whole video and two more smaller files which are parts of it???

Put them all in Magix...the two smaller files load fine....(bit only part of the content)

The full file at .99GB still will not load...

So.....VOB files do load....and load however put on timeline (tried the other way as well) BUT...the file I really want to import will not do so./...it must be just that file.....

Any thoughts please?

Thanks

Ray

Hi Ray,

Please answer the questions I asked earlier. And by 'other VOB files' in Q3 I meant VOB files from other DVDs, so as to be quite independent of this issue.

You could also try making another very tiny DVD in the same way and upload a VOB of a few MB in size so that we can try it.

My guess would be a corrupted VOB, but without more infomation that's all it is.

Hi Terry.......

Sorry....I will try and get some other vob files to test...

I can also try as you say and gat a small dvd to test....

I think you may be right in a corruted vob file......

Will come back later today but in the meantime thank you very much for your help...much appreciated.

Best wishes

Hi Terry...

I think problem solved but raises another...

Other VOB files play fine.

Took a vob file from another converted VHS tape...runs fine....

It appears the vob file is corrupt and presumably no means of repair.

However, I have, after an extensive search found the original VHS tape....so I need to get the recorder back out and reconnect and copy again direct to Magix,,,

If you don't mind I will let you know how I get on as an update....

If you have any other thoughts would be glad to hear them.

Best wishes

Hi Terry...just dio another google search and it appears there are options to repair the vob file!!!!!

May give those a try first.

Will let you know what happens.

Best wishes

OK Ray, good luck.

One other thought: VOB files are essentially MPEG files. If you just change the extension from VOB to MPG it might make the file accessible to repair tools designed for MPEG files. Or change it 'properly' with the program VOB2MPG.
