Video zoom function unusable

DuneElliot wrote on 7/26/2023, 8:27 AM

Recently upgraded to Movie Studio Suite 2023 from Movie Edit Pro Premium 2021 and have serious issues with the zoom function. Half the time it won't action, and when it does and I move it to where I want to end it bounces back to center/zooms back out at the end of the clip. This makes the zoom function basically unusable unless you want to zoom to center, which I don't always want to do. How do I fix this? Or is this a weird glitch?

@DuneElliot

There were/are issues with Camera/Zoomshot and Section; they were basically a mess, but have been fixed up mostly. The only problem I can see now is that for CZS, you have to deselect any object with the effect otherwise the it will be ignored when you export.

The other issue is that you have to activate the CZS keyframer by going into Size/Position/Rotation first, "Apply" that effect, then the CZS Keyframer works. We haven't decided if that is by design or just a hangover from the total mess it was when 2023 came out.

I haven't noticed what you are experiencing with the latest version, which is 172.

If you can, could you do a short video of the problem and post here.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

@DuneElliot Hi, when CZS is applied 2 keyframes are auto created, one at the start & one at the end of the keyframe timeline, sometimes the one at the end can be beyond the end of the timeline & out of view, click on the keyframe header 'Size/Position/Rotation' to turn it blue, this will make the keyframe controls active, then click on a keyframe to turn it blue, then use the keyframe arrows to go to the next/last keyframe, you can either use the bin button to delete that keyframe or use the up/down/left/right on your keyboard to bring it back into view.

-------------

Here for instance, when i click on the last keyframe it disappears beyond reach, I used the keyboard to bring it back, I the past I've seen this keyframe already beyond reach before even doing anything,

This might not be what's causing your problem, just thought I'd mention it.

@DuneElliot

Sorry, I forgot you were using the Camera/Zoomshot "Zoom" function. Normal CZS works as I described.

I just had a brief play with Zoom and it appears to be working as designed here, with the caveat that all the objects have to be deselected to export properly.

@AAProds Hi, it's not 100% clear which 'zoom' function is being used 🤷‍♂️ I just read into his statement I quoted that there must be a keyframe making it "bounces back to center/zooms back out at the end of the clip.", I can understand the zoom back out at the end but the 'bounces back to center' I'm not certain of, unless he has created a keyframe near the end just before a hidden one that i mentioned?.

I can't make the right KF disappear off the edge.

It happens pretty much all the time, might be my setup or mouse but just one click & off it goes 🤷‍♂️

DuneElliot wrote on 7/26/2023, 11:19 AM

So I have recorded a short clip. Of what is happening. I have had zero issues with this on Movie Edit Pro Premium. I have re-booted and reinstalled and it is still happening, and have installed an update with no improvement. If this isn't fixable I will need to return back to my 2021 version

Clip shows me resetting video video effects before selecting the Camera/Zoom Shot and then moving it to where I want to zoom too. I play the clip and you can see at the end it jumps back to center

@DuneElliot Hi, I can't tell what is going on in that vid. there's better screen capture options available.

I can see that when you add the zoom two keyframes are created

Then you position the cursor but not on the end keyframe.

Then you make changes to the on screen selection,

This will have created a new keyframe just before the end where you positioned the timeline cursor, you don't show the keyframe timeline but this looks like user error not a MMS fault

In Movie Edit Pro Premium I could just drag and drop the camera/zoom function to where I wanted and it would do it's thing all the way through. If Studio 2023 can't do this then it's not workable for me

Former user wrote on 7/26/2023, 12:35 PM

@DuneElliot I don't have MEP on my pc anymore but I don't think this has changed, when using an 'auto' zoom function like that there has to be a start keyframe & an end keyframe, either way just learn to position the cursor on the end keyframe,

This is what you did,

If this isn't what is happening post a Full screen video with none of that zooming in,

If you have a Nvidia graphics card Nvidia Geforce has screen capture with Alt+F9, https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/geforce-experience/ there's another capture software OBS but I know nothing of that,

I do the same things with MEP as I do with Movie Studio and have reinstalled MEP and it's acting perfect for me and doing what I want. It's definitely a MS issue

Former user wrote on 7/26/2023, 12:42 PM

@DuneElliot Post a full screen capture of it then,

If you don't want to download screen capture software just position your camera so it shows the full screen & don't move it,.

@DuneElliot

I've had a good play with MEP 2021 and MMS 2023 and I don't see any difference in functionality. Unfortunately, I think the clue to what's happening at your end may lie off screen below your video. If you can capture more of the screen that would be good. I'd suggest you use a still image too; that will make it easier to see what is going on with the zoom.

Hi

The issue with the zoom not holding at the end using your work flow is because you have not deleted the keyframe (the 3rd ) after the new one you created and then deselected the clip on the timeline.

Hi,

Further to what the others have said, you may want to help yourself by learning how to use keyframes and the size/position/rotation (SPR)effect, which is exactly what Camera/Zoom Shot does. Keyframes can be used with almost all effects, so it is to your advantage to learn how to use them.

Here is a tutorial on keyframing for SPR (part 4 of the series):

You may want to watch the other parts if you don't know how to use SPR effects or the new Anchor Points.
