Video Pro X15

simmiv wrote on 6/13/2023, 1:46 AM

I can see that Magix has released a new version of Video Pro named Video Pro X15, which I assume is an upgrade for the current version Video Pro X14.

Interestingly, they are not shy of splashing it across their website. Also when starting my instance of Video Pro X14 it throws up an add to upgrade i.e.

So offering an upgrade for a payment.

I have my copy under the annual subscription, so I find it odd that I'm being encouraged to pay for the upgrade. I've looked through my emails and of course there is no mention of the new version either.

Just wondering if others have had the chance to upgrade yet or have been offered the upgrade?

The Magix way. It doesn't seem to know what versions or update program you are on, it just pumps out emails to try to get you to upgrade. I'm copping upgrade emails to MMS 2023 which I have had for months.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Apparently I really have missed something. I too received the noticet to update to v15 for $149.00. I then sent information showing that I purchased v14 within the one year period. The reply was simply 'you are welcome to update for $149.00'. No explantions. I then sent them Magix url's clearly stating that there is a one year update period. Their response was the one year update period does not include Video ProX. As a matter of fact it only includes: Xara programs.

Really?? When was this policy put into place? Have I really been out of the loop?

Hi Barry.

You have misunderstood the difference between the word 'update' (including patches to the program purchased) with 'upgrade' (to a new version). There was a time when you would get the new version within that period when the contract was worded differently but if you lost that copy or had to re-install it, the version you got was the last one you had at the time of purchase so you lost the upgrade.

It has been that way for a few versions now.

Ray.

What Ray means is that the "free upgrade within 12 months of purchase" arrangement no longer applies (unless you're on a subscription plan, I think; no info on the subscription plan is given on it's website). You'll get free updates to your next purchase or paid upgrade (such as in this case) but you won't get a free copy of V16.

I thank you guys for the reply, but here is a cut and paste of what is currently on Magix support pages, including the URLs: (Notice it states: "If a new version of our software is released within a year, you'll receive it for free!"

Also note: this is not a case of reinstalling the program AFTER one year, this is WITHIN the one year period. And nowhere does it state this applies to XARA programs only and nowhere does it state Magix Video Pro X and/or Movie Studio is excluded. So, I am still confused.

https://www.magix.com/us/support/customer-service/

1 year update service With the update service you will receive a full year of new features and updates for free, which can be used indefinitely. If you reinstall the program after one year, you will have access to the basic version. After the one-year update service has expired you can extend it for a discounted price. Get all new features for free for 1 year! Always get the latest version Unlimited use of program

All new features and extras for 1 year Stay ahead, all year long: We'll continue to optimize and develop software that includes the Update Service and add new free features and extras. So when you use our software, you're always working with state-of-the-art technology. If a new version of our software is released within a year, you'll receive it for free! Benefit from free features and extras for a full year. To keep up-to-date after the Update Service has expired, you can extend it for a discounted price

@bjtap

Hi Barry,

Further to what the others said, the Update Service ceased a couple of years ago when the Subscription plan started. This was discussed in this forum.

As a further note, originally there was no Update Service, then there was for several years. Now it's back to the original plan - you get the version available when you purchase/upgrade and any patches for that version only.

Although not the reason for the end of the Update Service, there were complaints about the terms of having to reinstall after the Update Service period expired and being rolled back to the version available when you last paid. If you didn't have to reinstall, it was great.

I am accepting what you guys are saying... but that means what Magix has posted now is not true. Says if you re-install AFTER one year you have access to the basic version. In my case this is before the year is out. Magix also says "if a new version of our software is released within a year, you'll receive it for free". Also, I see no exclusions to Xara products only.

So while I do accept what you guys are telling me, it all appears to be not in agreement of what Magix has posted now. It seems Magix needs to clarify their policies. Apparently what you guys are saying is true for subscriptions, but is not stated so by Magix.

So again I thank you all, but unless I am missing something, Magix needs to change what they currently have posted.

Barry

AAProds wrote on 6/14/2023, 9:20 AM

@bjtap

It doesn't matter what is "currently" posted, in depends on what the agreement was at time of your purchase. I'm not familiar with the VPX line of sales or whether even was a "free version within 12 months" offer, but Magix went back to the old way of giving free "updates" only (not "upgrades"/12 month bizzo) a couple of versions of Movie Edit Pro ago.

Where are you currently seeing that you'll get a free upgrade within 12 months of purchase? I'm not seeing anything on the VPX subsite. All there is is Full purchase, subscription and upgrade. No mention of any 12-month free upgrades that I can see.

Hi Barry.

Yes, as with most things Magix related you really have to look carefully. That they use the term update to cover upgrade also helps to muddy the waters so to speak. Blame their advertising department and the fact the internet is international with lots of differing codes of conduct. My personal thoughts are 'As the website is base in America it is up to me to check the horse has a leg in each corner' 🤣.

@AAProds

Hi Al.

As for subscriptions, the same page states "Our new subscription service ensures that you always have the latest version of your software at hand".

Make of that what you will. Personally I would be horrified to see an upgrade that may slow down my machine because my hardware is getting older.

@Reyfox

Hi,

...still curious as to if anyone has VPX14 and their thoughts....

I presume that you mean VPX15, not 14.

Here are my thoughts and experience so far.

  1. No problems with installation. Apparently others had problems with protection systems.
  2. The interface is definitely crisper and easier to see (Image 1). Selected objects have a more orange colour than the previous yellow and stand out better (Image 2). Note the mute button in the track header of track 2, it's easier to see (Image 2).
  3. Track title has been moved to the top left of the header and is now always visible with the default track height or higher. The title is somewhat easier to see. (Image 2)
  4. Project Temp Folder import trimmed clip resolved (Image 3) - previously, when trimming the beginning of a clip before import and dragging it directly to the PTF, the beginning of range was always 0 instead of the trimmed start.
  5. Favourites - I'm not sure if this was improved, but it seems to be under Templates and Audio.
  6. The big improvement is being able to select an image in the Preview Monitor (Image 4) and the image is select on the timeline automatically and put into SPR mode if it has been applied (Image 5) and the SPR effect is showing under effects This is great for overlays where you may want to resize or reposition the object. However, the documentation and advert implies that just selecting the object in the Preview Monitor puts it in SPR mode. If the SPR effect is not visible or the selected effect, then the bounding box does not show up.
  7. New Zoom Feature - Scroll down to item 2 in this advert. This may related to my point 6 but the way that it is written I would think that it is zooming the Preview window, not the object. "Zoom in with the mouse and use the tracker to work more precisely in the preview monitor and view details better." I don't see anything about this in the manual and it's possible that it doesn't work. I don't know what they mean by "tracker."
  8. Added tab for MAGIX Hub. Only useful for those with a subscription. I don't have a subscription.

That's all that I've found so far.

@browj2 I thought I replied to you but it seems it was not saved or moderated.

"Updating" GUI's can be a plus or a minus. It looks nice, and might help in the functionality of the software. Zoom is nice for precise placement of effects/graphics/compositing.

Any discernable difference in working with VPX14 vs VPX13?

@Reyfox

Hi,

Any discernable difference in working with VPX14 vs VPX13?

I think that you mean between VPX15 and VPX14, no?

Other than what I mentioned about the screen being crisper and being able to select objects on the Preview Monitor (great feature), no. I haven't tried any exports yet.

The Object Trimmer has some new wrinkles (apparently also in VPX14 and MMS2023) other than the Ctrl+click not working to make 5-frame adjustments per click. What worked was Ctrl+Alt+click. Now, this makes 5-frame adjustments per click but only on the video part, not the audio part, thus creating J or L cuts. This is great and undocumented, but Ctrl+click needs to be fixed. Single clicking on right arrow on move Object Content still does not work, but Ctrl+Alt+click does and in this case moves both the audio and video content together.

So, there is nothing earth-shattering or ground-breaking.

Hi,

At #7 in my previous post about new features, I questioned the following:

New Zoom Feature - Scroll down to item 2 in this advert. This may related to my point 6 but the way that it is written I would think that it is zooming the Preview window, not the object. "Zoom in with the mouse and use the tracker to work more precisely in the preview monitor and view details better." I don't see anything about this in the manual and it's possible that it doesn't work. I don't know what they mean by "tracker."

I have figured out part of it. Place your cursor at a position in the Preview Monitor that you want to zoom in on and while holding down Ctrl, use the mouse wheel to zoom in. The zoom-in will be at the location of the cursor whereas before it was zooming at the centre. This avoids having to move around while holding down Ctrl. I presume that this feature is also in Magix Movie Studio 2024.

I still don't know what they mean by "tracker."
