Video Pro X12

Photo_G wrote on 3/2/2022, 4:55 PM

If you're a Movie Edit Pro or Movie Studio user and have considered Video Pro X, HumbleBundle has a great deal on version 12 right now, along with "FXhome Ignite Keying & Flares" and some music software (e.g., ACID Music Studio 11, SOUND FORGE Audio Studio 14, etc.). It's not the current version (X13), but would qualify for an update if you wanted to do that. It also has some additional content compared to Movie Edit Pro, like ProDAD Mercalli 2.0 for more stabilization options.

@Photo_G

Thanks for the heads-up!

Any comments from the floor about whether this would be $40AUD well-spent? What can VPX do that MEP can't?

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Some things listed there will be specific to X13, but the newer features that are not in X12 are each listed here:

Hi Al.

For now at least if you don't upgrade to XPX 13 you will keep a program with the main concept encoder.

The basic effects have more control such as the brightness / contrast and colour effects. Playback for most people is normally smoother than its MEP counterpart. You should get a working crop function. All your current third party effects will be available to VPX and normally load without additional steps needed.

The audio does sound better. At least on my system I do hear a difference.

Agreed. VP X12 has a very nice Curves adjustment on the Brightness/Contrast effect that is missing in MEP/MS. I've also found that Mercalli 2.0 stabilizes my shots better than the default VEGAS Stabilizer, which also has more compensation options than in MEP/MS 2022.

@AAProds

Hi,

Here is an old listing of most of the features of VPX that I can think of that are over and above MEP Plus/Premium. There are duplications with the Magix comparison table, of course as there was no comparison table when I did this. Also, I added a note about a bug with the Project Temp Folder (ticket raised)::

  1. Two monitors - source and preview
  2. Source monitors has other purposes - comparison images, measuring instruments
  3. Measuring instruments: VectorScope, Waveform monitor, RGB parade, Histogram
  4. Project folder with one level of virtual folders, can be saved separately and imported into a new project. Very useful for creating rough movies from DV tape where everything is in one file and you want to separate out scenes from different subjects. Ex. A DV file may have a wedding, a vacation and Christmas on it and you want to split this up to have similar topics in separate movies and then edit them separately in their own project. VPX12/13 bug - cannot import trimmed clips directly to the Project Temp Folder properly - loses the start.
  5. Additional buttons on tracks, main ones to mute video and audio separately (MEP mutes both)
  6. Audio - moving audio object to less than a frame
  7. Effects - under Brightness/Contrast - Colour curves - RGB for brightness/contrast and individual color curves Red, Green Blue
  8. Same effects area - can insert LUTs
  9. Effects - under Color correction - 3 colour wheels - the "Highs", "Mids" and "Shadows" ranges can be adjusted individually
  10. Multi-cam - 9 tracks
  11. Multi-language capability - meaning when you burn a DVD you can select the language of the sound track if you created different language audio tracks
  12. DVD creation - import and export PSD format giving you wide latitude for changing the screens, buttons, etc. for DVD burning. Can use Xara or PhotoShop for this
  13. Movie objects (nested sequences) Movies can be used in other movies as individual objects. These objects keep the action close at hand and can be used as many times as needed within the project.
  14. EDL transfer to DAWs - Audio files can be directly transferred to DAWs such as MAGIX Samplitude using EDL transfer, and you can individually bounce all audio tracks to hard disk.
  15. Loudness normalization according to EBU R128 Complete broadcast capability: Video Pro X offers loudness normalization for professional audio products in accordance with the new international EBU R128 guidelines.
  16. HEVC/H.265* support -  Video Pro X is the world's first video editing program with Intel HEVC hardware encoding. HEVC/ H.265* is the successor format to H.264 and offers improved image quality at file sizes that are up to 43% smaller.
  17. Native ProRes support Video Pro X now fully supports ProRes video codecs for Apple. Directly integrate ProRes files into your Windows system.
  18. Precise color grading with 16-bit deep color
  19. 10-bit/12-bit support for professional formats
  20. Direct access to Xara 3DMaker for modifying and creating 3D titles
  21. One can also link MEP/VPX and Samplitude (and Samplitude Music Studio) in a master/slave relationship to edit both simultaneously; great for scoring videos but requires multiple screens, powerful computer and 2 audio cards.
  22. VPX uses the Samplitude Engine for audio.

Here is what the scopes look like in the Source Monitor:

There is no way that I would go back to MEP.

VPX12 worked fine on my old computer and has the old Size/Position zoom slider that I wish Magix would put back in.

@browj2 That's odd. Yesterday the description said Mercalli 2.0. I can confirm that it doesn't include the Mercalli 5 Suite, just the Mercalli 2.0 stabilizer. There's no standalone, and it can't be used with other NLE's as far as I can tell.

Hi Al.

I just press Escape whenever I have the mouse problem. That seems to happen whenever an automatic save is taking progress.

In fact a few things happen with MEP such as if I am typing here awaiting an export to finish, when the export finishes, if I'm still typing here, I open the MEP burn to disc menu.

@AAProds Yep. I jumped on the Movie Studio 2022 Platinum deal with NewBlue TotalFX.

@AAProds Thanks, here's my plug list for reference. It's definitely missing. I have logged this with HB support.

proDAD Mercalli V5 Suite is missing from Video ProX 12 purchase as well.

Ticket sent to HB

I can see the confusion, when you install it you also get this image.

And then on the Magix Video Pro X page with the X12 release date;

"Real-time video stabilization For the first time, video stabilization is possible without time-consuming analysis or rendering. The time-unlimited full version of proDAD Mercalli V5 Suite allows for real-time video stabilization in Video Pro X. proDAD Mercalli V5 Suite is included upon purchase of new software or extension of the Update Service, or when you upgrade."

@nah-nah Thanks! I didn't even notice that. Maybe we -should- have it!

Fwiw, the X12 manual only shows V2. I have also emailed proDAD support to ask abut this.

Gents, out of interest, what is the update status of your VPX 12? The recent Humble bumble is 18.0.1.95.

Ta!
